Meet the Martinez Family.
These sisters share a deeply personal look into what it means to care for a loved one living with dementia.
Raised in a close-knit, family-centered home—what’s often called familismo in Hispanic culture—the idea of a nursing home was never something they imagined. But after a sudden change in their mother’s cognitive health, they were faced with a difficult reality: ensuring her comfort and safety meant seeking additional support.
What they found was not a loss of their role, but a shift in it.
With the support of a care team, they were able to step back into being daughters again. Still present, still involved, but now able to focus more on love, connection, and meaningful time together.
