Elite Sports Performance & Rehab

Elite Sports Performance & Rehab We also focus on the uninjured athlete to develop strength, flexibility, agility, speed and balance for injury prevention. THE BIG DIFFERENCE!

Relentless Training and Injury Rehab brings 24 years of athletic training and rehabilitation experience with collegiate and professional athletes focusing on aggressive and effective treatment designed to return athletes to the game physically and mentally. Most physical therapy clinics treat only the athletes symptoms and not the actual cause of the injury. This may make the athlete pain free for a short time but it does not permanently fix the problem or prevent re-injury. For example: A young pitcher goes to therapy for a sore shoulder. The physician and therapist treat the soreness in the shoulder. But unfortunately the soreness in the shoulder is secondary to poor mechanics which is cause by either a functional strength deficiency or a lack of flexibility. Secondly, most physical therapy clinics will get the athlete better but only to the point that they were when they were injured. As a result they will return to competition, but in a short time they will have soreness in the shoulder again or possibly worst. At Relentless we will evaluate every aspect of the injured athlete. This sometimes includes meeting with coaches and trainers that work with the athlete as well and assessing performance in their environment. From there we will design a course of treatment that will be focused around achieving the athletes goals and most importantly making them stronger and better than they were before to prevent re-injury. ONE ON ONE TREATMENT
Relentless is a cash based practice. Because of this we are not held to the same restraints as many clinics which are forced to have therapists work on 3 to sometimes 4 patients at a time. We are ALWAYS one to one treatment and we never double book. The result is better patient outcomes in less time. Our goal is to help you achieve your goals with a total patient focused approach.

Navigating the Curve: Understanding Shoulder Impingement in Baseball Pitchers

Shoulder impingement is a prevalent issue among baseball pitchers, often affecting their performance and longevity in the game. As athletes continuously push their bodies to achieve optimal results, the repetitive and high-intensity nature of pitching can lead to various injuries, with shoulder impingement being a primary concern. In this blog, we will delve into the intricacies of shoulder impingement, its causes, symptoms, prevention, and potential treatment options specifically tailored for baseball pitchers.

Understanding Shoulder Impingement:

Shoulder impingement occurs when the rotator cuff tendons and the bursa (a fluid-filled sac) in the shoulder are compressed between the bones of the shoulder. In baseball pitchers, the repetitive overhead arm motion, especially during the pitching motion, can contribute to this compression, leading to irritation and inflammation. This condition is often associated with overuse, improper mechanics, and muscle imbalances.

Causes of Shoulder Impingement in Baseball Pitchers:

Overuse: The shoulder joint is subjected to tremendous stress during a pitching motion. Overuse, without adequate rest and recovery, can result in wear and tear, increasing the risk of impingement.

Poor Mechanics: Incorrect pitching mechanics can contribute significantly to shoulder impingement. Faulty techniques can place unnecessary stress on the shoulder joint, leading to inflammation and eventual impingement.

Muscle Imbalances: Weakness or imbalance in the muscles surrounding the shoulder, particularly the rotator cuff muscles, can affect the stability of the joint. This instability can contribute to impingement over time.

Symptoms:

Pitchers experiencing shoulder impingement may notice the following symptoms:

Pain or discomfort in the shoulder, especially during or after pitching.
Weakness and decreased range of motion in the affected shoulder.
Difficulty lifting the arm overhead.
Swelling and inflammation around the shoulder joint.
Prevention Strategies:

Proper Conditioning: Implementing a comprehensive strength and conditioning program that targets the muscles involved in pitching can help prevent imbalances and enhance overall shoulder stability.

Rest and Recovery: Adequate rest between pitching sessions is crucial to allow the shoulder to recover. Overtraining can increase the risk of overuse injuries.

Mechanical Assessment: Regular assessment of pitching mechanics with the help of coaches or sports professionals can identify and correct any flaws that may contribute to shoulder impingement.

Cross-Training: Engaging in cross-training activities that promote overall fitness and flexibility can be beneficial in preventing shoulder injuries.

Treatment Options:

Rest and Ice: Resting the shoulder and applying ice can help alleviate inflammation and promote healing.

Physical Therapy: Targeted physical therapy exercises can improve shoulder strength, flexibility, and overall function.

Anti-Inflammatory Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be recommended to reduce pain and inflammation.

Corticosteroid Injections: In some cases, corticosteroid injections may be administered to reduce inflammation.

Conclusion:

Shoulder impingement is a common challenge faced by baseball pitchers, but with proper awareness, preventive measures, and early intervention, players can minimize the impact of this condition. It is crucial for athletes, coaches, and medical professionals to work collaboratively to ensure the long-term health and success of baseball pitchers, allowing them to continue delivering those impressive curveballs on the field.
