Ophthalmologists nightmare. Protect your eyes!! It’s not uncommon after an eye surgery that gets rid of glasses (like laser vision correction OR cataract surgery) to have an eye injury. Why? Because we have things flying at our eyes all the time and many of us are protected by our glasses! Without the need for glasses to actually see, most people get rid of them and don’t wear safety glasses….but they wind up seeing me for urgent visits because they got poked with… a pencil, their finger, their babies finger, their friends finger, a piece of paper, metal, a plant… etc!! Make sure you wear your eye protection while you’re doing anything that may poke you! Yes that means when grinding metal, using a saw, pulling nails out, hammering nails in, gardening, mowing the lawn, etc!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼👓🕶

She’s so stylist!!! But she’s missing sunglasses! Her day at the beach may be ruined! As the days get longer and we move into the spring and summer months and you may be spending more time outside! Don’t squint for hours, get yourself some UV protection! Did you know that sunglasses are the easiest way to block the suns harmful rays not only from the eyes (cornea, lens and retina) but also the eyelids? Skin cancer is extremely common on the eyelids and people can’t easily put sunblock on those areas. If you see any changes in your eyelids (lash loss, pigment changes, strange lumps or bumps) let your doctor know!! Also remember that spf!! day

Did you know that you should have your eyes examined annually? Many people think if they aren’t having issues, they don’t need to have their eyes checked. There are somethings like glaucoma for example, that will not give you symptoms until very late in the game. Does anyone in your family have glaucoma? Don’t know what glaucoma is? It’s damage to the optic nerve that occurs over time. This can cause you to loose peripheral vision. Without treatment you can permanently lose vision. Don’t wait, have a full eye exam (that includes dilation! Your provider will see if it’s safe for you!) soon! Your regular doctor doesn’t send you away for year right? Well neither does your eye doctor! Annual visits are a must! #30-2 #24-2

One eye and many findings. This gentleman was sent for a ptygerium evaluation. A pterygium is a fibrotic growth that stretches from the conjunctiva /scleral (white area) of the eye , crosses the border (called the limbus) of the white and colored part of the eye, and creeps over the clear cornea, often causing discomfort, redness, and a change in the vision. Pterygium is from the Greek word, wing. It looks like a diaphanous wing stretching over the cornea! A pterygium can interfere with the planning and measurements for cataract surgery. It must often it must be removed, first in a separate surgery, before cataract surgery in order for the visual outcomes to be the best outcomes to be most successful. While examining this patient I also noted his cataract , and his iris which is both blue gray AND brown. The patient told me that he had this brown area (heterochromia) ever since he could remember . We will continue to monitor it carefully.

What’s the difference between Femtosecond laser assisted CATARACT surgery and LASER VISION CORRECTION (Lasik, PRK, Smile)??? There’s always a little bit of confusion about this. The femtosecond laser is used to break apart the natural lens of the eye in cataract surgery. This makes some lenses easier to remove and can also make small incisions in the cornea, called limbal relaxing incisions, that can treat some astigmatism. The laser can actually Pass through the cornea and leave it unharmed and selectively just break apart the lens while still inside the eye. After that we take the patient to the operating room and make a small incision and insert a tiny instrument to remove the lens. Laser vision correction on the other hand utilizes the Femto second laser to make incisions in the cornea. The femtosecond is used in LASIK to make a partial thickness flap in the outer most portion of the cornea and after the flap is flipped back a second laser, called an Excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. In SMILE, The femtosecond laser is utilized to create a small lenticule within the cornea, and this wafer like micron thin lenticule is then removed from the middle part of the cornea, via a tiny laser cut hole, with a special instrument. Which procedure is right for you? If you have a cataract or in certain situations for those with certain corneal or eye issues, a lens based surgery may be best for you. For others, a cornea based surgery may be the best. Talk to you doctor about what is best for you and your specific situation. Here I am next to the Femto second laser getting ready for a cataract surgery. Great day in the OR!
