MEET JENNIFER / THE NISSWA YOGA STORY

Jennifer is passionate about transforming the way people perceive themselves and connect with their bodies, using yoga and meditation as tools to live a more peaceful, balanced, and authentic life. Jennifer has been teaching yoga in the Brainerd Lakes area since 2012. Prior to that, she lived in Bethesda, Maryland where she had the opportunity to study yoga with Advanced Iyengar teacher, John Schumacher. Jennifer finished her first yoga teacher training program with Neva Ingalls in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Since then, she has studied extensively with Alexandria Crow and completed a Restorative Yoga teacher training with internationally acclaimed teacher, Judith Hanson Lasater. She has completed more than 1100 hours of yoga training and taught over 2200 classes. As a teacher, Jennifer aims to make yoga and meditation approachable to anyone at any level. She guides you through practices that are mindful and sustainable; empowering you to make decisions that are best for your own body. Her teaching style is grounded in yogic philosophy and focuses heavily on learning to pay attention. By helping you to acknowledge, accept, and appreciate your individuality, Jennifer helps you to connect to yourself and the world around you with more compassion. Nisswa Yoga was founded in 2013 by Jennifer and a business partner as a brick-and-mortar yoga studio. Jennifer took sole ownership in 2016, serving as lead teacher and teacher trainer. In 2022, Nisswa Yoga transitioned to an online studio for Jennifer’s classes. She also leads a collaborative of talented yoga teachers that teach private classes at resorts, event centers, and homes across the Brainerd Lakes Area of North Central Minnesota. In the summer months, Nisswa Yoga also offers outdoor classes and events.

Curious about our Winter Mindfulness event on Sunday? Here's a peek at a private Mindfulness on the Ice session from earlier this month.

We explore how ice teaches steadiness, practice breathing techniques that actually work in the cold, and discover simple winter mindfulness practices you can use on your own, no special equipment required. Think of it as forest bathing's cool cousin.

This Sunday we'll be:
• Mindful walking on ice (finding your footing in more ways than one)
• Winter-friendly breathing practices
• Meditations using the frozen lake as our guide
• Take-home techniques for your own winter walks

Bundle up in layers and bring your sense of adventure. We’ll embrace the season rather than escaping it.

FREE for unlimited members, use code MINDFUL at checkout

These testimonials about Revive & Restore: Yoga at Nature Link remind me why this practice is essential; a weekly return to breath, body, and the present moment.

Each class, rooted in yoga philosophy, weaves therapeutic movement with gentle somatic strengthening, creating space to honor your body’s wisdom and cultivate deep awareness through mindful exploration. We close with deep rest, allowing waves of restoration to wash over you.

This is your invitation to come home—to yourself, exactly as you are.

Happy New Year ❄️

The chorus of “transform yourself” messages is everywhere today. Let them fade into background noise.

Perhaps this is the year you trust your body’s wisdom. The year you accept winter’s call to rest and recover from December’s whirlwind.

You aren’t a project that needs completing. There’s no upgrade necessary. No cleanse, no bootcamp, no reinvention required. Especially not now, when you’re exhausted from the holidays and nature itself is dormant and still.

When people ask about your resolutions, you can simply tell them: I’m good.

We don’t magically become blank slates. We continue forward, bringing everything with us: our experiences, what brings us joy, our sorrows, our knowledge, our softness.

When yoga philosophy guides our practice, it shows us how to be present with reality. How to see our own gifts without measuring them against others. How to remember our inherent wholeness. How to move with the seasons, understanding when to push forward and when to pause.

Join me this Sunday for our first Revive & Restore session of the year at Catalyst by Nature Link. We’ll honor where you are right now - no transformation required.

Good morning! A quick update for this Saturday's Revive & Restore class (8-9am): we'll be gathering in Pineview Hall upstairs at Catalyst by Nature Link.

Catalyst is directly across from the Cypress Lounge - you can't miss it! Just head upstairs to Pineview Hall where we'll have a warm, quiet space with gorgeous views of frozen Clark Lake for our practice.

We'll explore therapeutic movement, breathwork to settle the nervous system, and cultivate somatic awareness - all designed to help you release the week and restore your energy for the weekend ahead.

Give yourself an extra minute to make your way upstairs and settle in.

Looking forward to sharing this hour of equanimity with you.

This morning's walk: bare oaks and maples against gray sky, white pines holding steady green, everything rooted in frozen ground.

Both teach resilience in their own way. The oaks know when to release, pull inward, trust in roots alone. The pines maintain essential functions even at ten below, flexible enough to shed snow loads without breaking.

Right now, beneath soil frozen solid for months to come, root systems are doing their deepest work. Not waiting for spring - preparing for it.

Your nervous system works the same way. December isn't about enduring until warmth returns. It's about the foundational work that only happens in stillness, in the quiet, in the dark.

Some days you're the oak - strategic release, conscious rest. Other days you're the pine - steady presence, consistent practice. The wisdom is knowing which tree you are today.

Trust your roots. They know what they're doing, even when you can't see their work.
🌲

Join me for Revive + Restore, Saturday 8:00 - 9:00 am at Nature Link's Cypress Lounge. Let's tend those roots together.

Think yoga is all good vibes and no hard days?

Nope. The hard days still come. But the practice helps you move through them.

Yoga and meditation don't make you immune to difficulty. They don't prevent challenges from arriving, and they won't magically erase pain or frustration when it shows up. Life will still hand you moments that knock you off center.

But the practice gives you tools to find your way back.

Abhyasa - showing up for your practice, even when progress feels invisible. Even when you don't feel like it. Even when everything in you wants to give up.

Vairagya - letting go of how things "should" be, releasing timelines and expectations. Surrendering to what is, rather than clinging to what you wish it would be.

The work asks us to practice both. Keep showing up AND surrender control. Stay steady AND let go. Notice when you've drifted, and have the tools to return to center.

That's the practice. Not perfection. Not constant calm. Not immunity from struggle. But the capacity to meet difficulty without being consumed by it. To be present in the hard moments. To pay attention. To find steadiness even when life feels unsteady.

This is what we practice together. In my classes, we build these tools, breath by breath, movement by movement. We learn to notice when we've lost our center and how to find our way back. We practice showing up and letting go. And we do it in community, supporting each other through the work of building steadiness that lasts beyond the practice space.

Whatever you're facing right now, you don't have to navigate it perfectly. Show up for yourself. Let go of what you can't control. Trust that the practice meets you exactly where you are.

I’m back to teaching a public class, in-person on Saturday mornings again! Join me from 8:00 to 9:00am in the Cypress Lounge .mn, right next to the main lobby. Come as you are, and let's practice together. Link in bio for details.

Our new website is live! It’s been designed to reflect what Nisswa Yoga is all about: supporting your journey toward greater connection, compassion, and well-being - on and off the mat.

You’ll find a clearer look at how I offer support, including intentional movement, breathwork, and meditation practices virtually or in person here in the Brainerd Lakes Area. We’ve also highlighted ways to bring yoga practice into events and gatherings, with custom offerings designed to meet you exactly where you are.

I’d love for you to explore the new site, check out the offerings, and join me for a practice…whether on the mat, on the beach, or online. We have a few more weeks of yoga on the beach to soak up the last golden days of the season, and I’m offering another mini-retreat at the end of the month. Check it all out at the link below!

With gratitude,

Jennifer
