Indiana Orthopedic Institute (IOI) has reached an exciting milestone: the successful completion of our very first joint replacement surgery in our new state-of-the-art flagship facility. This achievement comes just one week after finalizing Medicare enrollment — a major step forward for our team and the patients we serve.

The inaugural case was a total hip replacement performed on a 70-year-old primary care physician from South Bend, who traveled two and a half hours to receive expert care from our IOI team. We are honored to have earned this patient’s trust and are proud of the world-class care delivered by our dedicated physicians and staff.

In addition to our exceptional medical team, this milestone reflects the power of a thoughtfully designed facility that prioritizes both quality and efficiency. IOI was built as a highly specialized ambulatory surgery center focused on hip and knee replacement and upper extremity procedures — allowing us to deliver exceptional care in a more cost-effective, patient-centered setting. Patients are able to return home safely just hours after surgery, supported by a seamless care experience.

Postoperative recovery is closely monitored through fully integrated technology, including bi-directional engagement tools like myrecovery by Healthcare Outcomes Performance Co. (HOPCo), which enable real-time communication and guidance during recovery at home.

This is just the beginning — and we’re excited for what lies ahead.

We’ve successfully completed our Medicare enrollment process, meeting the Conditions for Coverage (CfCs) required for certification. This certification is essential for IOI to receive Medicare payments and participate in the program. To achieve this, Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) like IOI must operate exclusively to provide outpatient surgical services, have an agreement with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and meet all CfCs. Now that we’re officially certified, our first surgical procedure will take place later this week!

It’s been a journey of steady progress since we opened our new facility in early February — starting with hip injections, preparing for surgical procedures, earning formal recognition from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), and now completing our CMS enrollment. Congratulations to an incredible team! Your focus and dedication to providing exceptional care truly reflect the Hoosier Spirit — a spirit of hard work, community pride, courage, and determination.

Dr. Brian Palumbo, a nationally renowned hip and knee surgeon based in Florida, chose to travel thousands of miles to Indiana to have his partial knee replaced by Dr. Michael Meneghini, one of the most respected orthopedic surgeons in the country. What makes this even more remarkable is that both surgeons co-designed the implant used—the innovative EMPOWR Partial Knee.

Dr. Palumbo trusted the expert team at IOI to perform his procedure using the very implant he and Dr. Meneghini helped bring to life.
