Get to know Dr. Richard Makowiec 🌟

Dr. Makowiec is a board-certified hand and upper extremity surgeon at Indiana Orthopedic Institute with more than 20 years of experience. He specializes in treating conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow, including sports injuries, fractures, trauma, work-related injuries, and disorders affecting nerves, tendons, and bones.

As a former high school athlete, Dr. Makowiec’s journey into orthopedics began after an arm injury introduced him to the impact of compassionate orthopedic care. That experience inspired his career and passion for helping patients restore function and return to the activities they enjoy.

Born and raised in Michigan, Dr. Makowiec completed his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, his orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University, and his fellowship at the Indiana Hand Center. He also served as a staff orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. Navy and as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University.

Today marks 1 year since Indiana Orthopedic Institute officially opened its state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center in Noblesville, Indiana! 🎉

On February 13, 2025, the City of Noblesville joined Indiana Orthopedic Institute to cut the ribbon on our flagship facility, a 38,000-square-foot surgery center and medical office building dedicated to advanced orthopedic care specializing in hip and knee replacement. This facility was the first tenant at Noblesville’s Innovation Mile, a 600-acre community designed to drive sustainable growth and foster innovation.

Over the past year, the ambulatory surgery center has become more than a place for world-class orthopedic care. It is a hub for the community, a center for innovation, and a home for our dedicated team who are committed to helping patients regain mobility and live active, healthy lives.

This video takes us back to that special day, from the ribbon-cutting celebration to a tour of our advanced operating rooms, orthopedic clinics, and x-ray suites, and even a glimpse at the progress of the building as it came to life. We are proud of what we have built and grateful to the Noblesville community for welcoming us. 💙

Here is to continuing our mission of innovative care and making a difference in the lives of patients for years to come!

Many joint replacement patients are told to lose weight before surgery. But when severe arthritis makes walking and climbing stairs painful, weight loss can feel impossible.

Barbara experienced this firsthand. She came to Indiana Orthopedic Institute with bone-on-bone arthritis in both knees after years of conservative care. Her quality of life was deeply affected.

With care from Dr. David Luo, Barbara moved forward with knee replacement surgery. Today, she is back to sewing, quilting, attending car shows, and spending time with friends without planning her day around pain.

If knee pain is affecting your daily life, call 317.620.0232 or visit indianaortho.com.

Thank you to the almost 90 primary care physicians and providers who joined us for a day of discussion and hands-on learning at our flagship Noblesville facility for the inaugural Indiana Musculoskeletal Summit hosted by Indiana Orthopedic Institute.

Saturday’s inaugural Indiana Musculoskeletal Summit, in partnership with The MORE Foundation, was a complimentary Continuing Medical Education event with deep dives into orthopedic conditions common in primary care offices. Expert physicians and staff presented case studies, information on physical exams, pain diagnosis and management, treatment options, injections, and more.

We greatly value our relationship with primary care providers and their crucial role in orthopedic care and the overall health and well-being of patients.

Big news! Nine of our orthopedic surgeons and our two anesthesiologists are 2026 Castle Connolly Top Doctors – a distinction achieved by only 7% of U.S. physicians.

Nominations come from other physicians, with only about 72,000 of the nation’s 1.1 million doctors being named Castle Connolly Top Doctors.

This goes to the heart of our approach: a surgeon-led, research-focused team providing cutting-edge care that treats patients like family. You’ll feel that right when you walk in.

Coming Soon: Dr. Michael Meneghini on Becker’s Spine & Orthopedic Podcast

Becker’s Spine Review recently released a preview of Dr. Michael Meneghini’s upcoming podcast episode. Dr. Meneghini, founder and CEO of Indiana Orthopedic Institute, will discuss one of the most important shifts in orthopedics today: the transition from individual autonomy to what he calls “collective autonomy.”

In the preview, he explains why traditional models of physician independence no longer align with today’s healthcare landscape and how team-based, data-driven decision-making is important for sustaining high-quality orthopedic care. He also shares how collective decision-making helps balance physician autonomy, evidence based standardization, financial sustainability, and strong patient outcomes.

This preview offers a valuable look into the leadership approach shaping the future of musculoskeletal care. We’re looking forward to the full episode when it’s released, and we’ll share it with our followers – stay tuned!

Physician autonomy remains more important than ever in the orthopedic landscape, but it has to look different compared to past decades, Michael Meneghini, MD, said.
