Why Your Gut Could Be the Reason You’re Not Sleeping Well
Have you ever found yourself lying awake at night, unable to switch off, despite feeling exhausted?
It might not just be stress or caffeine… it could be your gut microbiome.
It might not just be stress or screen time. Your gut health could be playing a bigger role than you think...

The gut and brain are connected through what’s called the (gut-brain axis) a communication system involving nerves, hormones, and immune signals.
Around 90% of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate sleep and mood, is produced in the gut, not the brain.
The gut microbiome (trillions of bacteria living in your digestive tract) helps produce neurotransmitters like GABA and melatonin, which are vital for relaxation and deep sleep.
When your gut is imbalanced (a condition called dysbiosis), it can lead to poor neurotransmitter production, impacting your sleep quality.

If your body is reacting to certain foods or environmental triggers, your immune system may become overactive, releasing inflammatory molecules like cytokines.
Chronic low-grade inflammation has been shown to:
▪️ Disrupt circadian rhythms
▪️ Interfere with REM sleep
▪️ Increase anxiety and restlessness at night

Ongoing immune stress (from food/environmental sensitivities) raises inflammatory cytokines.
These cytokines interrupt melatonin production, disturb your circadian rhythm, and keep cortisol levels high at night - all of which make sleep difficult.
What can you do ✅ ?
• Support your gut with diverse, fiber-rich foods.
• Identify hidden food sensitivities that may be causing inflammation.
• Consider comprehensive testing of your gut and immune responses especially if symptoms persist.
If you or your patients are dealing with:
✔️ Sleep issues
✔️ Bloating or digestive problems
✔️ Unexplained fatigue
It might be time to look beyond the surface and into the gut.
