Congratulations to the first cohort of Medical Assistants to graduate from Access Academy by Good Samaritan Health of Gwinnett! . I’m so proud to have worked to support this initiative from its inception three years ago. To amplify the existing strengths of a community – community health mindset, language, and more, as these graduates had – to address its needs, in health, economic development, etc. is something this project has been all about.

This holiday season, need is close to home in Southwest Gwinnett and, thankfully, nonprofits are answering with action. These organizations carry the season’s meaning into daily work:

Norcross-based Helping Mamas Inc is focusing its holiday efforts on dignity and relief for metro Atlanta families under strain.

Neighborhood Cooperative Ministries in Norcross is focused on keeping families stable through the holidays.

At Peachtree Farm , located on Research Ct. in Peachtree Corners, work continues through the cold months. Greenhouses stay active while fields rest

CarePointe, a ministry of Cross Pointe Church in Duluth, is centering its holiday work on practical relief. The team continues to provide food, clothing and ESL services while meeting seasonal needs.

The Good Samaritan Health Centers of Gwinnett stay open and focused on uninsured neighbors through the holiday season, with staff continuing to provide medical and dental care that many could not otherwise afford.

INCREDIBLE news! 🎉 We are beyond grateful to State Representative Marvin Lim for Georgia and his nonprofit Lucky Shoals Community Association for funding an additional FULL scholarship for our Medical Assisting Program at Access Academy! Deadline to apply to the Access Academy Medical Assisting Program is Monday, December 15, 2025. Classes begin January 12, 2026. You can find the application and full program details here: www.goodsamgwinnett.org/AccessAcademy

UPDATE: LSCA, my nonprofit, will fund one additional full scholarship for Medical Assistant certification at Good Sam’s Access Academy. (It’s a great extension of our community health workforce program at LSCA, which has previously seen local residents become community health workers and earn certifications in everything from CDC-Diabetes Prevention Program coaching to CPR/First Aid to crisis/mental health first response.)

If you’re interested in low-cost Medical Assistant certification in Norcross, consider applying to Good Samaritan of Gwinnett’s new Access Academy program. 2 full scholarships available. This program, you may recall, was my FY25 budget request to the state, and despite hurdles, I’m so happy for Good Sam (whom we also honored with House Resolution 693) for earning its Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission accreditation and launching. Thank to Shameka, Greg, and all the staff.
