"This is an intense piece of fictionalized history- I was able to finish in two days even with March Madness. The only other work of fiction I've read anywhere similar was American Pastoral [by Philip Roth]. This book is similarly horrific and fantastic, a miasma of life and death issues interlaced with the harsh reality of the ever present Vietnam War. It's got a Less Than Zero meets American Pastoral thing going on about it.
It's an important piece of art, and you can quote me on it!"

THE SERPENT PAPERS is an historical novel written and published this year about the complexities of the Vietnam era, which created a rift in our generation. It has been NOMINATED FOR A PULITZER PRIZE AMONG OTHERS

The book is intended to bring both sides of this painful issue to a rapprochement. Although he did protest the war, the author has always felt strongly that the boys who fought in Vietnam were patriots, which is why he wrote the book. Major characters include a WWII veteran and a boy who volunteers and goes to VN who is the best friend of the protagonist. Schnader’s centrist attitudes come through his characters and the pain they feel over the war.

In 1971, he had a draft card and was classified as 1A. He was assigned a number in the draft lottery in 1972 and had no student deferment.

He protested against the Vietnam War in 1972 and marched in Manhattan with TPF (riot police) on horseback riding next to him, towering over him (intimidating).

He was present at the riot when Columbia president William McGill called the TPF (tactical riot police, all over 6'0" and large men in battle regalia with jackboots, plastic battle shields, helmets with plastic visors covering their faces, batons, guns, etc) to surround our demonstration (about 1000 students on their own campus and the same number of police). They charged the protestors (they were doing their job; the fault was in calling them), and a riot ensued, a melee. Schnader stood against the Vietnam War when it counted.

When Schnader became a physician, he ran an intensive care unit in the VA Hospital system for 15 years and proudly served the veterans for 22 years- full time- in VA hospitals while a Professor of Medicine at university. He knew the sacrifices our soldiers made in Vietnam and always felt that those who fought were patriots.

The Foreword to the book, THE SERPENT PAPERS, was written by a decorated Vietnam combat vet who said the book was the best book he had read in the last 10 years. Another veteran who served in Vietnam for 1000 days and who was extremely decorated loved the book [Recipient of 3 Purple Hearts & 2 Bronze Stars, Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Gold Palm Award, Meritorious Service Medal; US Army, 1st Infantry & Americal Divisions; Vietnam, 1966-67, 68-69, 70-71 (served 1000 days)].

Finalist: Foreword Reviews Book of the Year Awards, 2022

The Serpent Papers is a historical novel set at Columbia University amidst the 1971-72 campus demonstrations against escalation of the Vietnam War on a back-drop of murders & ’70s counterculture.

It is the story of J-Bee, raised in the 1960-70s, son of a rear admiral from a Catholic military family. When his best friend volunteers to fight in Vietnam, J-Bee is expected to join the military or enroll at the US Naval Academy. However, because of unexpected childhood trauma, he matriculates at Columbia University in 1971, where he becomes ideologically trapped between the military perspective of his family and Columbia’s cauldron of anti-Vietnam War culture and protest.

As ratcheting tensions and bullhorns incite students to protest, factions collide in campus demonstrations which turn into riots, and J-Bee is forced to make the decision that comes to define his life.

April 19, 1972, 50 YEARS AGO. After a noon rally at the physics building (Pupin Hall), over 1000 Columbia students marched through Morningside Heights demanding Columbia University be shut down for complicity in mining the Ho Chi Minh Trail as its professors had grants to advance war technologies.

Chanting "One, two, three, four, we don't want your f------ war!" their ranks swelled further as they marched to 106th Street from campus and then back to the School of International Affairs where they smashed nine windows and graffitied the building with "SIA = CIA" (Columbia later changed the name of SIA to SIPA).

At 3PM that day, University President William McGill personally presented protestors, who had barricaded Hamilton Hall so that he could not enter it, with a restraining order, enjoining them from preventing faculty and students from entering the building.

THE SERPENT PAPERS, by Jeff Schnader, is set at Columbia in 1971-72 during the campus demonstrations, sit-ins & marches against the Vietnam War. It features murder on a back-drop of ’70s counterculture, and it accurately portrays the riot which occurred on campus when police troops were called in to disperse the protestors.

THE VIETNAM WAR IS STILL THE DEFINING EVENT OF ITS GENERATION. It created a rift between those who fought and those who protested—a rift which this novel aims to heal with rapprochement.
