Spring sports season is here, and protecting your eyes is just as important as protecting the rest of your body.

Sports like basketball, baseball and racquet sports are among the leading causes of eye injuries. Protective eyewear made with polycarbonate lenses is designed to help shield your eyes from impact while you play.

Whether you’re competing, practicing or playing recreationally, wearing the right eye protection can help reduce the risk of injury. Talk to your eye doctor about protective eyewear designed for your sport.

Sports are a great way to stay active, but they can also put your eyes at risk if proper protection isn’t used.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, up to 90% of serious eye injuries can be prevented with protective eyewear. Sports like basketball, baseball, racquet sports and hockey are among the most common causes of sports-related eye injuries.

Protective eyewear made with polycarbonate lenses can help shield your eyes from impact while you play.

If you or your child participates in sports this spring, talk to your eye doctor about the right protective eyewear for your activity.

Our very own VEC Residents Drs. Amanda Eslinger and Rita Nguyen have been busy these past few weeks both learning as well as educating our colleagues.

February 13-14, 2026 - The Winter Summit has been a highlight of the Residents' experience in partnership with East West Destinations CE Meeting. This years’ meeting was held in Clearwater, FL. Our very own VEC Residents presented posters on “When Sensation Fails: Medical and Surgical Rescue of Neurotrophic Keratitis” by Dr. Amanda Eslinger and “Rebuilding an Unstable Surface: A Case of Severe Acute KLAL Rejection in Aniridia” by Dr. Rita Nguyen. Way to go Drs. Eslinger and Nguyen!!

February 20-22, 2026 – The following weekend Drs. Eslinger, Nguyen and Whitley attended the inaugural Catalyst Series: Where Dry Eye & Aesthetics Innovation Meets Implementation. The goal of this event was providing tools to address dry eye disease and how it bridges into aesthetic offerings. This interactive session involved both didactic lectures and hands on workshops on Intense Pulse Light (IPL), Radiofrequency (RF), Low Laser Light Therapy (LLLT) and Dynamic Muscle Stimulation (DMS). Attendees were able to enhance their skills in ocular surface disease and aesthetic treatments.

February 25-28, 2026 – Lastly, Drs. Eslinger, Nguyen, Rachon and Whitley attended SECO 2026 which is one of the premier education meetings in the country. Our providers presented the following:

➡️ Diabetes
➡️ Hypertension
➡️ Autoimmune conditions
➡️Neurological concerns
If your doctor asks about medications, family history or any changes since your last visit, they’re assessing your whole health, not just your eyesight.

Spring allergies can make your eyes itchy, watery, and uncomfortable, but rubbing them may actually make symptoms worse. Rubbing your eyes can release more histamines and further irritate the surface of the eye.

Instead, try artificial tears, a cold compress or allergy eye drops to help soothe irritation. If seasonal allergies are affecting your eyes, your eye doctor can recommend treatments to help you stay comfortable this spring.

Make an appointment to learn more.
