Ballistic injuries to the head and neck region can lead to devastating trauma to the cerebral vascular system. Check out our study presented @ Plastic Surgery Research Council

Every year in the US, over 100,000 people are shot, among these victims almost a third die from whereas the others may have lasting deficits. About 50% of patients that survive all GSW trauma will have adverse effects after treatment. In this study Olajide Olatidoye () and his co-authors from The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University investigated the prevalence of penetrating cerebrovascular injury and the association with certain fracture patterns of the skull in regard to ballistic trauma. Fracture patterns may discern specific types of cerebrovascular injury and from this, quicker evaluations may be made to prevent traumatic brain injury from facial gunshot wounds. Check out this beautiful story of Luke Haithcock, a local East Carolinian, a fellow Pirate, a courageous cancer survivor, who not only beat an extremely rare form of sarcoma, but who is now helping others in their fight against cancer.

By all accounts a typical teen, Luke Haithcock loved to high-five his friends. The school-hallway equivalent to a handshake, the greeting punctuated Haithcock’s days at South Central High School in Winterville. One day, he noticed that a routine high-five caused a twinge of pain in his right...

Thanks to Caroline, Yifan and Matthew for pulling together a great presentation. And thank you heroes for all you do. Check it out in the Sunday-Monday expanded edition of The Daily Reflector.

Dear friends, the number of coronavirus cases in the US has surpassed that of Italy and China, making USA the country with highest number of patients infected with the deadly virus. As many of you know, due to lack of proper testing, this number greatly underestimates the true incidence of positive cases, and many patients are asymptomatic, and are spreading to other people, making them sick.

Please stay home. I’ve talked to many of my colleagues, who are surgeons and academic leaders around the country. Most urgent surgeries have been canceled at Vidant, in NC, and around the country. If you were injured from trauma (car accident, assaults), unless it is life or limb threatening, surgical treatment will be delayed. So be safe, be smart, be informed. Stay home!

Major outbreaks in so-called hot spots such as New York threaten to overwhelm the local hospital systems, which have a limited number of beds, staff and equipment.
