First Black Pharmacist in the U.S.
William Procter Jr. is often called the “Father of American Pharmacy,” but the first known African American pharmacist was James McCune Smith, who operated a pharmacy in New York in the 1800s after earning his medical degree abroad due to racial discrimination in U.S. schools.
