Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities

Since 2009, the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities has provided postsecondary opportunities to students ages 18-28 with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities. HALO students build personal and social skills through a balanced learning experience that includes reading, writing, math, and technology. In addition, the program offers these students an opportunity to experienc

e life on a college campus while developing self-determination, independent living, and employability skills.

HALO Transition classes begin soon! Want to know what you'll be studying? In Fall term, Transition students will learn about themselves and others in Social Emotional Development. Through interactive lessons and activities, students will learn to navigate social situations, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Classes begin soon! Are you interested in what you'll be learning this semester? HALO Transition students will explore possibilities for next steps in Transition to College or Workforce. We'll do a deep dive into the resources available at Heartland Community College that will help students be successful if they want to go on to take credit courses toward a degree or certificate. Then they'll explore skills needed for anyone wanting to take steps toward more competitive employment.

📣HALO students classes start in 2 weeeks!
Your second class first semester will be Social Development, which will assist students in becoming more aware of themselves as individuals and develop a strong and confident identity. Through a range of discussions students will evaluate their communication styles while learning communication techniques for various social situations and relationships. Can't wait to connect soon!

📣HALO Students Classes start in 2 weeks!! 🎉
First semester you will take Computer Technology which Introduces students to the major components of computer hardware and software. You will learn the basics of word processing, spreadsheets, using Windows, email and the Internet. You will also be introduced to various pieces of assistive technology. See you soon!
