HALO Program

HALO Program Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities

Since 2009, the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities has provided postsecondary opportunities to students ages 18-28 with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities. HALO students build personal and social skills through a balanced learning experience that includes reading, writing, math, and technology. In addition, the program offers these students an opportunity to experience life on a college campus while developing self-determination, independent living, and employability skills.

The HALO Program hosted a lunch and learn this semester highlighting some of the different social/community clubs offered in our area. First up is the The Penguin Project of McLean County!! They are a non-profit organization with "the vision of creating unrestricted access for children with special needs to the performing arts." The penguin project is open to any individual age 10 -24 with a disability. They utilize a peer mentor system so every artist is linked with an age level peer who does not have a disability. The peer mentors work side by side with the artists and will even accompany them on stage. If anyone is interested in learning more please reach out to them at penguinprojectmclean@gmail.com or visit their website at: https://www.penguinprojectmclean.org/

Winter snuck up on us, so we want to remind everyone of campus procedures in the event of severe weather.

Any campus closings are sent to all students and staff through the HCC Alerts text messages. All students signed up for this the first day of class so should receive the text in the event a campus closes.

HALO Program follows the Heartland Community College closing decisions. If a campus is closed, there will be no HALO classes at that campus for the day. Since weather can be localized, pay attention to which campuses are closed. HALO will only cancel classes at a campus that has closed; any open campuses will still have class.

Please remember, staff will find out at the same time as students when the Alerts go out. Do not contact instructors or HALO staff to ask if classes are cancelled--we will know when you know. :) If you aren't sure, you can also check the Heartland Community College website or your Heartland email.

Finally, we understand we have HALO students from all around central Illinois. The weather conditions may be better in Normal than where you live. Please make the best decision for your own safety when deciding whether or not to travel at these times. If campus is in session but you feel it is better to stay home, simply contact your instructors to let them know.
