Halloween fun? Yes! 🎃
Choking hazards? No, thank you! 👻🍬
While Halloween is full of excitement, some treats can pose a choking risk for kids under 5.
Here’s what to keep in mind to ensure everyone has a safe and sweet celebration, from our pediatric speech language pathologist:
🚫 Watch out for:
“Mini,” “fun-sized,” or small candies—they’re not safer and can easily get stuck in little mouths.
Sticky or hard-to-chew treats like peanut M&Ms, caramels, Milk Duds, taffy, gum, candy corn, Skittles, and gummies—kids often swallow these too soon!
👍 Safer options:
Look for soft treats that break apart easily or can be bitten into pieces. Think Kit Kats, Reese’s cups, or classic Hershey bars—delicious and easier to handle!
🛑 Allergen Alert:
Many candies contain common allergens beyond nuts or dairy, like egg in some chewy treats. Always double-check labels if allergies are a concern!
Let’s keep Halloween filled with treats, not tricks—or worries! 🎃🍫
