Central Oklahoma Community Mental Health Center (COCMHC) was the first facility of its kind in the United States. Kennedy, federal and state funds were used to build and staff COCMHC under the Community Mental Health Act of 1963. COCMHC was first housed on the campus of Griffin Memorial Hospital, then called Central State Hospital. In 1969, the mental health center moved to its present location on Alameda Avenue. The buildings and campus on Alameda Avenue were designed specifically for community based services. The COCMHC campus won architectural awards for design. COCMHC opened for services at our current location on July 3rd, 1969.
