The National Center for Disability Education and Training at the University of Oklahoma is a Department within Public and Community Services, a part of the College of Continuing Education within University Outreach. With a rich history of innovative training, direct service, and research in the field of disability, the Center delivers a variety of programs to advance the employment and independent

living of individuals with disabilities. Established in 1965, NCDET initially delivered short term, in-service training in supervisory and management skills to Vocational Rehabilitation professionals from across the country. Thousands of professionals from public and private vocational rehabilitation agencies visited the Norman campus to receive training from the former Rehabilitation, Administration and Management Program. Using that successful training program as a launching point, NCDET continued to develop coursework for rehabilitation staff of state agencies and community rehabilitation providers, specializing in cutting edge management and executive leadership training programs. Since this start 40 years ago, NCDET has built its program through new grants and contracts with a variety of state and federal agencies and entities around a central, enduring mission to maximize the independence and productivity of individuals with disabilities.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day. This was originally autism awareness day, but it has shifted to “acceptance” day. We dedicate the day to celebrating the rights, dignity, and diverse perspectives of autistic people, held every year on April 2. The day serves as the centerpiece of Autism Acceptance Month, providing a platform to amplify autistic voices and advocate for neuroinclusive environments in schools, workplaces, and community. Instead of focusing on deficits, the observance highlights the unique strengths of the autistic community, such as analytical thinking, high attention to detail, and a deep focus on specialized interests.

Oklahoma Project SEARCH

Team Spotlight: The Metro Technology Center program was originally launched in 2011 in partnership with Chesapeake Energy. After a brief hiatus in 2020, the program reopened in August 2022 with Wyndham Grand Downtown Oklahoma City as the primary host business partner.
What makes this program unique is its ability to collaborate with multiple downtown businesses to provide diverse internship opportunities. Current primary partners include Wyndham Grand Oklahoma City Downtown, Metro Technology Center, the Department of Rehabilitation Services, DRTC, and the University of Oklahoma National Center for Disability Education and Training.
The program is led by Instructor Kennell Winrow and Work Skills Trainers Lilie Ruth Bell and Shanee Wilson. This team has demonstrated innovation and flexibility, driving continued success. Metro Technology Center remains committed to supporting individuals with disabilities and serving their communities.
