On Sunday, March 15, our team at Adoption Choices of Oklahoma experienced something no organization ever expects to face. During a day of severe winds, damage to electrical lines and transformers sparked a fire in our building — and in a single moment, the space where so many families found hope and support was forever changed.
While our office sustained only minimal fire and water damage, the preschool next door was devastated. The building has been deemed structurally unsound and will most likely be demolished. What was once a place filled with laughter, learning, and life is now inaccessible, and we are unable to safely enter to retrieve even the most basic items from our office.
We have moved into a temporary shared space so that we can continue serving the families who rely on us. However, nearly everything that allows us to do our work — our furniture, computers, client files, copy machine, shredder, and essential office equipment — has been lost or remains out of reach behind closed doors.
For years, Adoption Choices of Oklahoma has walked beside birth parents, adoptive families, and children during some of the most emotional and life-changing moments they will ever experience. We have been a place of reassurance during uncertainty, compassion during hardship, and celebration during new beginnings. Supporting others in vulnerable moments has always been our mission.
Now, we find ourselves in a vulnerable moment of our own.
As a nonprofit organization, we depend on the strength and kindness of our community. Today, we are asking our former, current, and future clients — and anyone who believes in the work we do — to help us rebuild.
