Has your massage therapist ever sent/handed you the infamous Intake Form? In my massage escapades, I've had therapists who knew my gig and others who didnโt have a clue. But what really boggles my mind is when Iโm not handed that trusty form or when vital health chats are mysteriously missing from the session!
I consider myself to be relatively healthyโmy blood pressure is well-managed, I'm not on any medications, and I haven't undergone major surgeries. Yet, I believe I have reached an age where it's important to start asking health-related questions. Whereas, if one of my daughters visited a different massage therapist and they neglected to ask her about her health simply because she appears young and healthy, I would be extremely concerned. My daughter has had a cervical fusion, which means there must be absolutely no hyperextension of her neck; she also has limited rotation, only able to turn her head a certain distance to the right and left. But just looking at her, you would have never known.
If a therapist fails to inquire about your medical history, that's a significant red flag! My clients understand that completing my Intake Form is essential; I always review it briefly when we first meet, and even if I see you weekly, I will consistently ask, โIs there anything new regarding your health?โ
Massage therapy is beneficial for the body, but each session must be unique to the individual. We all have different health concerns, and therefore, massage should be customized to suit each person's needs.
