Deodorants have been a hot topic with regards to their impact on hormonal systems. The concern revolves around the use of chemicals and certain metals that can interfere with the endocrine system, which is responsible for hormone regulation. โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Here are 3 ways your deodorant could be negatively impacting your hormonal balance:

โ›” Parabens and Estrogenic Activity:
Parabens are synthetic chemicals commonly used as preservatives in personal care products to prevent bacterial growth and extend shelf life. Certain parabens bind to estrogen receptors on cells, disrupting normal estrogen signaling pathways.

Examples of parabens include:
๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ Methylparaben
๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ Propylparaben
๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ Butylparaben

โ›” Phthalates and Disruption of Androgens:
Phthalates are a group of chemicals in fragrance formulations and plasticizers in various products. Certain Phthalates have been associated with anti-androgenic effects, interfering with androgen signaling pathways and disrupting the normal functioning of the reproductive system.

โ›” Metals and Oxidative Stress:
Heavy metals are commonly used in deodorants as active ingredients to inhibit sweat and control odor. Aluminum and other metals in deodorants can induce the generation of reactive oxygen species, which can lead to oxidative damage to cells, lipids, proteins, and DNA.

The impact of this oxidative stress on hormonal systems is not as direct as with parabens or phthalates- it's important to consider its potential effects on overall health and the body's ability to maintain homeostasis.

Think of it this wayโ€ฆโคตโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Every bite you take is either an opportunity to fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive, or the opposite - make any inflammation in the body worse and prolong healing.

โœ… Embrace a diet rich in colorful fruits, vibrant veggies, and high quality protein. Without these nutrients, your body's ability to absorb and utilize medications can actually become compromised.

โœ… A healthy diet can help prevent many health issues in the first place. By focusing on prevention through proper nutrition, you can reduce the need for medications in the long run.

โœ… Itโ€™s not just about what you eatโ€”it's also about when you eat. Avoid heavy meals close to bedtime, and give your body the restful sleep it craves. Ensure your high carbohydrate meals are before and after exercise to prevent a extended stress hormone release.

The truth is that a well-balanced diet isn't just a short-term fixโ€”it's a lifelong investment in your health!

Let's shift our focus from quick fixes to sustainable habits. Remember, you have the ability to take charge of your healthโ€”no prescription needed!

What are the most common symptoms of SIBO?โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Bloating: A hallmark symptom of SIBO is bloating that worsens throughout the day, but is virtually nonexistent upon waking.

Feelings of fullness: If you feel uncomfortably full or gassy right after eating, it could be due to SIBO

Gas and Burping: Chronic burps or flatulence after eating may indicate SIBO

Abdominal Pain: Particularly gas pains in the upper abdomen.

Diarrhea or Constipation: Both can be an indication of SIBO.

If any of the above symptoms decrease when taking antibiotics or increase when taking probiotics, this is also a good indication of the presence of SIBO.

The intricate connection between sleep and the menstrual cycle is mediated through the HPA axis. โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Poor sleep quantity OR quality can activate stress responses, elevating cortisol levels. This surge in cortisol disrupts the release of key hormones like:

๐ŸŒ™ Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
๐ŸŒ™ Luteinizing hormone (LH)
๐ŸŒ™ Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

๐Ÿ‘‰ All of which are ESSENTIAL for a healthy cycle! ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Anovulation, a condition where ovulation occurs irregularly or not at all, is a common consequence of poor sleep patterns. This disruption in the ovulation process can lead to skipped or unpredictable periods.

Sleep disturbances can magnify menstrual discomfort, making symptoms like cramps and mood swings more intense due to lowered pain tolerance. ๐Ÿ˜’

Sleep patterns can vary across the different phases of the menstrual cycle due to fluctuating hormone levels.

๐Ÿ”นFollicular Phase (Days 1-14): Rising estrogen - lighter sleep and easier awakenings.
๐Ÿ”นOvulation (Around Day 14): Peak estrogen - a boost of energy but can affect falling asleep.
๐Ÿ”นLuteal Phase (Days 15-28): Higher progesterone - drowsiness but also more awakenings at night.
๐Ÿ”นPre-Menstrual Phase: Hormonal changes - affecting mood and physical discomfort, potentially impacting sleep.

Prioritizing healthy sleep habits throughout the entire cycle can help support better sleep regardless of menstrual phase.

๐Ÿ—น Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
๐Ÿ—น Create a relaxing bedtime routine
๐Ÿ—น Manage stress levels

Ladies, letโ€™s talk about menstrual cycle irregularities and chronic stress playing a significant role in the development of symptomsโคตโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ–ช๏ธ Missed periods
โ–ช๏ธ Prolonged / short cycles
โ–ช๏ธ Fluctuations in menstrual flow

Here are the key ways in which chronic stress can impact your menstrual cycle:

โš ๏ธ (HPA) Axis Dysregulation
Chronic stress boosts cortisol and adrenaline release, disrupting reproductive hormones (GnRH, LH, FSH), crucial for steady menstrual cycles.

โš ๏ธ HPG Axis Disruption
The HPG axis controls the release of s*x hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the menstrual cycle. Chronic stress-induced alterations in the HPA axis can affect the HPG axis, leading to irregularities in the timing and balance of these s*x hormones.

โš ๏ธ Anovulation
Chronic stress can result in anovulation, a condition where ovulation does not occur regularly or at all. Anovulation can lead to skipped periods, irregular cycle lengths, and difficulty conceiving.

โš ๏ธ Alterations in Menstrual Hormones
Prolonged stress can impact the secretion of hormones such as GnRH, LH, FSH, estrogen, and progesterone. These disruptions can lead to changes in the growth and development of ovarian follicles, as well as maintenance of the uterine lining.

โš ๏ธ Sympathetic Nervous System Activation
Chronic stress activates the sympathetic nervous system. This can divert resources away from non-essential functions, like reproduction, potentially affecting the regularity of menstrual cycles.

What are some of your favorite ways to help reduce stress levels?

๐Ÿ’ŠAntibiotics -typically Rifaximin for Hydrogen dominant SIBO and metronidazole and neomycin for Methane dominant- are the conventional medicine approach for SIBO treatment, or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Let's talk about why this may not be the best option for long term eradication of SIBO.

โ™พ๏ธThese antibiotics may kill enough of a SIBO infection to offer relief for some time, but studies show there is a 44% recurrence rate within 9 months for SIBO treated this way.

๐Ÿ’ฐRifaximin is not always covered by insurance, and costs upwards of $1,500 out of pocket.

๐Ÿฆ These antibiotics kill not only the small intestinal overgrowth, but also wipe out the majority of your good bacteria. This can lead to long term dysbiosis of the microbiome.

๐Ÿ˜ตThese antibiotics are used in a short course, one time treatment. If they don't kill ALL the overgrowth in one go- which they often do not- the bacteria will simply become overgrown once again.

๐ŸŒฑWhat's the alternative? A holistic, long term course with antimicrobials, binders, micronutrients, probiotics, and other gut health rebuilding supplements.

๐Ÿซถ๐ŸผIn functional medicine, we take a more gentle, long term approach. Not only do we get rid of the overgrowth, but we repair the impaired gut health that triggered SIBO to begin with.

โŒ Circadian Disruption: Disruptions to the circadian rhythm through sleep patterns or night-time exposure to artificial light can lead to imbalances in melatonin, cortisol, and reproductive hormones.โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โŒ Harmful Hidden Ingredients: Processed foods are often high in refined sugars, trans fats, and contain hidden ingredients that can disrupt insulin sensitivity and promote inflammation, leading to disturbances in insulin, estrogen, and other hormones.

โŒ Environmental Toxins: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) prevalent in plastics, cosmetics, and pesticides mimic or interfere with hormones. These EDCs, such as phthalates and bisphenol-A, can disrupt thyroid, estrogen, and testosterone function.

โŒ Digital Overload: Prolonged exposure to blue light suppresses melatonin production, affecting sleep quality and hormonal balance. Constant digital connectivity can elevate stress hormones like cortisol.

โŒ Chronic Stress: Persistent stress triggers the HPA axis, resulting in sustained cortisol release. Chronically elevated cortisol can disturb thyroid function, insulin regulation, and reproductive hormones.

โŒ Emotional Stress: This includes anxiety and depression, which can initiate neuroendocrine responses that impact the hypothalamus and pituitary gland leading to to disruptions in TSH, gonadotropins, and more.

โŒ Social Isolation: Loneliness and lack of social support can elevate stress hormones and impact immune function, leading to disruptions in multiple hormone systems.

โŒ Vitamin D Deficiency: Insufficient sun exposure affects vitamin D, a main player in hormonal balance, including insulin regulation and immune function.
