At 20 minutes old, newborns are beginning to regulate temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood sugar.

That's why at the Birth Center, there are a lot of things we *don't* do... like
🫀Clamp the cord before it's finished
🤱🏽Separate baby from his parents
👏Vigorously rub the baby
💡Use bright lights
📣Make a lot of noise

Those first few moments are fragile- there's lots of change happening! Your baby has never seen light, never felt cold air, never been separated from your voices.

Direct skin to skin with a parent engages all of baby's senses, stabilizes their vital signs, and settles their nervous system.

Welcoming baby into a busy, bright, cold environment packed with strangers, cutting the cord right away, and using an artificial warmer (Mom works better than a warmer!)? Nah. We like our babies chill 🙂

Amias' mama caught him in the water, snuggled him skin to skin, gently talked to him as he took his first breaths, and was happy to share him with Dad after his cord had done its work. Notice he's pink, alert, and...calm

Shep is the first baby to visit the new birth center 💃Loved this 6 week postpartum graduation visit- but more than that, loved that Kayli and Shep spent their afternoon visiting with me while I worked, because that's the dream I have for this space 🤍 and those baby faces kept us cracking up alll day 👶🏼

The vibe ~ family nap time 🤍 This birth suite isn't finished, but it's off to a great start : ) beats a hospital bed and a pull out couch... hands down. every day of the week.
