We are seeing a lot of flu-positive kids right now. If your child has tested positive for flu (including a rapid test from the pharmacy) or has classic flu symptoms, here are some at-home care tips that can help over the weekend.
Flu home care tips:
💧 Fluids are key – small, frequent sips to prevent dehydration
🛌 Rest – allow extra sleep and quiet time
🌡️ Fever control – acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed for age and weight. We have added a link below to our online dosing guide.
🤧 Congestion relief – humidifier, saline spray, gentle suction for younger kids
🍲 Food as tolerated – appetite may be low, and that is okay
🦠 Limit spread – good handwashing and keeping sick kids home
💊 About antiviral medication (Tamiflu):
Antiviral medication is not routinely recommended for most healthy children with flu and is not always necessary for recovery. When it is considered, it must be based on a child’s age, medical history, symptoms, and timing of illness.
For safety reasons, we do not prescribe antiviral medication without an in-person evaluation. If you feel your child may need antiviral treatment this weekend, the safest option is to be evaluated at an urgent care center.
Most children improve with supportive care at home, and we are always available through night triage for urgent concerns.
🚨 Urgent warning signs – call 911 or seek immediate care at the nearest emergency room if your child has:
• Trouble breathing or fast, labored breathing
• Blue or gray lips or face
• Signs of dehydration (very little urine, dry mouth, no tears)
• A fever that is not improving or a child who is difficult to wake
• Worsening symptoms or anything that concerns you as a parent
Our office is closed for the weekend and will reopen on Monday morning.
