Language Tip 🗣️
You don’t need to tell your child every time they make a language or articulation mistake. Nobody likes to be called out all the time! You can model correct language and articulation by repeating what your child said and emphasizing the correct language or articulation.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SCREENINGS

⭐️Speech and language screenings are a quick and easy way to determine if further evaluation in the areas of speech and language is warranted.

⭐️ Speech and language screenings can identify children at risk of speech and language delays and help them gain access to the services they need.

⭐️Daycares, preschools, and private schools can reach out to schedule screenings for their students.

⭐️Screenings are available for children three years of age and older.

⭐️Parents/caregivers must consent to the screenings.

⭐️Want to set your facility apart from others? Wonder if your students would benefit from speech language screenings? Question about who pays for these screenings? Are you a parent interested in a speech and language screening? Reach out today with any questions or to start the scheduling process!

October is AAC Awareness Month📱

What is AAC? AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC is when alternative means are used to augment speech or as an alternative to speech.

AAC is such a special area of speech pathology to me and something I am so passionate about! I have worked with so many different types of devices, communication systems, and communicators.

I love helping someone learn how to become a more effective communicator. Sometimes that may be a young child being encouraged to use some form of AAC for the first time or an older child improving their ability to communicate with their chosen communication system.

Everyone has the right to communicate 💬

Terrible twos or terrific twos 2️⃣ ?

However you think of it, two-year-olds are developing rapidly. They have thoughts and opinions that they want to communicate to you! This is a great age to start teaching new vocabulary words, and the concept of shapes, colors, letters, and numbers.

Remember, developmental milestones are a guideline and all babies develop differently. Looking at developmental milestones can assist in early identification of children with delays. Concerned about your little ones development? Reach out to speak with a professional.

Sensory bins ⭐️

Sensory bins can be a great activity for little ones. They offer children an opportunity to play and explore with a variety of materials. They are also full of language opportunities. Let your little one guide the play and see their imagination and language come alive.

Not sure how to make a sensory bin? It’s easy! Add one or two base items (colored rice, beans, rocks, sticks, sand, etc.), some cups or scoops, and some toys. That’s it! Sensory bins can have a theme, like construction vehicles, ocean, or farm, or it can be random things you find in your house. Sensory bins don’t need to be pretty to be fun!

BOOKS 📚

I’m sure you’ve heard that reading books is important for your child’s development but do you know why? Here are five reasons reading books helps your child’s language development:

1. Vocabulary. Books are full of new vocabulary words for your child to learn. Better yet, they are often paired with pictures to offer a deeper understanding.

2. Language. Children hear a variety of sentence structures within books. When they become familiar with books they might even start repeating those sentences.

3. Topics. Books are available on any topic you can imagine! They can help you preview new adventures or can provide background knowledge about new subjects.

4. Communication. Books provide you an opportunity to talk with your child. You can ask and answer questions about a shared context.

5. Literacy skills. Reading books in early childhood improve children’s early literacy skills including, how to turn the pages, how to orient the book, what letters and words look like, and more!
