Good reminder. How will you add soy into your diet this week?

If you read Dr. Pendergrast's book: Breast Cancer: Reduce Your Risk with Foods You Love you know Dr. P is a big supporter of whole soy products. The NY times just published an article of 10 food myths that dietitians wished people understood. We will be sharing these 10 myths over the next few weeks. The first one is the information from The Times about soy! If you eat soy regularly, what is your favorite way to enjoy it? Please share!

Myth No. 9: Eating soy-based foods can increase the risk of breast cancer.
High doses of plant estrogens in soy called isoflavones have been found to stimulate breast tumor cell growth in animal studies. “However, this relationship has not been substantiated in human studies,” said Dr. Frank B. Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. So far, the science does not indicate a link between soy consumption and breast cancer risk in humans. Instead, consuming soy-based foods and drinks — like tofu, tempeh, edamame, miso and soy milk — may even have a protective effect toward breast cancer risk and survival. “Soy foods are also a powerhouse of beneficial nutrients related to reduced heart disease risk, such as high-quality protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals,” Dr. Hu said. The research is clear: Feel confident incorporating soy foods into your diet. From The New York Times

A question for today.

Today our life, health and grief coach will be doing a webinar regarding heart health and we wanted to remind everyone the importance of this question below.

We know fat around our waist places us at much greater risk for heart attacks. So if you are willing take a look in the mirror and do some measurements of hips and waist. Think about about your needs and let us know if you want some support and guidance.

“Apple-shaped women and men who gain weight around their middles are up to four times more likely to have a heart attack than their pear-shaped counterparts who store excess pounds in the thighs and buttocks.”Michael Gault, M.D., a board-certified cardiologist, at Saddleback Medical Center.

Botanical Medicine in a Time of Anxiety

I love plants. I live in a temperate zone with four seasons, so I am fascinated to see and experience the emergence of green and multicolored plant life from the grays and browns of winter. I love closing my eyes and hearing the sound of wind rushing through the leaf canopy overhead in the woods in the summer. I love watching seeds sprout out of the ground and become garden plants, bearing squash, tomatoes and beans. The color of a daisy stops me in my tracks. Plants are magical. So it’s no surprise that I would be drawn to the wonders of botanical (herbal) medicine.

For centuries in western civilization, and to this day in many areas of the world, botanical medicine has been the primary source of medicines taken by people to prevent or treat disease. The wisdom of these practices passed down over generations leaves us with a rich legacy of traditional medicine that has been proven by the test of time. Plant medicine that had no effect would not be passed from generation to generation, but abandoned by societies that needed good medicines. In many cases, traditional uses are sufficient for me to recommend an herbal medicine, but also in many cases we have modern science that has looked into how and why these traditional remedies work. Could they work for you?
