I’m thrilled by the good news that Chesapeake's Bounty - North Beach Market will remain in North Beach near 7th and Bay. Here are a few staples I picked up this weekend: farm fresh eggs, Oksana’s ferments, & leafy greens. (I made the best collard greens I ever ate this morning, BTW!)

🥒 🤢 If you want a snack that tastes like the smell of the inside of a Toys R Us, or like the smell of a plastic shower liner, has you covered!

I love TJ’s (discontinued) and their pickle seasoning (it adds a fun twist to French fries and even scrambled eggs!) The potato chips are good, too, but I generally avoid potato chips. However, the flavoring on these is not tasting at all like the previous pickle items to me. Eating them put me in a pickle because I was around others and had to swallow them. Word to the wise!

With the supply chain issues at grocery stores lately due to winter storms, the pandemic, etc., consumers are feeling left out in the cold when it comes to fresh produce. Fortunately, fresh produce is still available at local food markets such as Chesapeake's Bounty. When grocery chains shelves were bare, the Bounty has a, well, bountiful supply of fresh, local food, as always.

For those looking for solutions inside their grocery store... did you know produce from the frozen section is oftentimes more nutritious than its fresh counterparts in grocery stores? If you're not good about using your fresh produce fast enough, frozen produce can help you reduce your household food waste, saving you time and money.

I figured it's worth re-sharing a post from last winter about frozen produce. Check it out:

🍭⚡️💙 Fun fact as we head into winter and the season of mint candies: Lifesavers Wint O Green hard candies emit a “spark” of light when bitten (or crushed) due to a phenomenon called (TL). When I was a kid, a friend and I used to chomp these in the dark and watch the sparks of blue light, laughing.

I mentioned the phenomenon to a couple people today and they’d never heard of it, so I thought I’d share. Also, I hear the candies can’t be the sugar-free kind, and that other hard candies sometimes work, too. Here’s a video showing the TL in slow motion.

🦀 I’m in love with Ajika Georgian seasoning blend. I use it to dry rub pork tenderloin and chicken, but imagine it would be amazing on seafood, particularly crabs. It tastes like some sort of vintage Maryland fried chicken recipe and makes chicken taste fried even if it’s not. Magic! 💥 It hit me that Ajika could be Trader Joe’s version of Old Bay. I’m a Marylander—no wonder I like it so much! 🍗

🌶 Last night as I sprinkled Ajika seasoning over mac ‘n’ cheese, it got me wondering about the recipes for other crushed red chili pepper-based seafood seasonings i.e. Old Bay and J.O. Did you know Old Bay was first named India Girl, and that seafood houses typically do not use Old Bay to season steamed crabs? (You might’ve noticed large salt flakes that aren’t in Old Bay.) Old Bay is a household brand but there are other seasonings at work in the crab houses’ kitchens. 👩‍🍳

(More on the Ajika later!)

Meet the seasoning most crab houses use. It's not Old Bay.

☘️ 🍺 Did you know? Despite its dark color, Guinness Draft beer has the same alcohol by volume (ABV) as Coors Light, Bud Light and Miller Lite - 4.2%. 🪶🏋🏼‍♀️ The fact that it pleases so many while being just as “watery” and low in alcohol as Coor Light is a testament to the brewery.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!!

Who knew this dark, thick brew could be so good for you?

🌶 🥢 Shish*to peppers are a quick and easy low-calorie snack that’s rich in vitamin C and flavor. They can be roasted in the oven or in a pan on the stovetop. When I cook, I prefer to use the oven in the evening (I’d rather put something in the oven rather than watch over a pan.) In the mornings, I tend to do more pan-based cooking and food prep.

This recipe is for oven-roasting shish*tos while my next recipe will go over pan-roasting/blistering them.

Ingredients:
6 oz. raw shish*to peppers (1 Trader Joe’s package) – stems on
1 tbsp. avocado oil
1 tbsp. low sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp. Sriracha hot chili sauce (I prefer the Huy Fong version or Sriracha CHA!)
1 tbsp. rice wine vinegar
Himalayan pink sea salt crystals

Directions:
Preheat oven to 430 degrees. Combine all ingredients except the peppers in a bowl. Then dip/swirl/brush the mixture onto the peppers. Place the coated peppers on a baking sheet. Roast for approx. 8-12 minutes at 430 degrees F in the oven. You will start to smell their aroma after about 7 minutes or so, and it might make your mouth water! I noticed that roasting the peppers in the oven made me anticipate eating them more than pan-roasting them. The aroma was stronger.

Remove from oven. Sprinkle with a dash of sea salt. Allow to cool for a couple minutes, then pick them up by the stems and enjoy!
