Natural Daylight May Aid in Type 2 Diabetes Management.

New research suggests that office workers with type 2 diabetes who are exposed to natural daylight have healthier blood glucose levels, improved fat metabolism, and better circadian rhythm regulation than peers who work exclusively under artificial lighting.

Chronic Respiratory Diseases Affect 1 in 15 People Worldwide.

Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study, researchers estimate that approximately 569.2 million people worldwide are living with one or more chronic respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, pneumoconiosis, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary sarcoidosis. While genetic factors can influence susceptibility, experts note that long-term exposure to cigarette smoke, combustion-related air pollution, occupational dust and chemicals, allergens, mineral dust, and infections are primary drivers of poor lung health and disease exacerbations. Addressing these exposures could substantially improve respiratory health worldwide.

Hands-On Treatment May Benefit Bruxism Patients.

Bruxism is a condition characterized by involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth, typically occurring during sleep or periods of stress, and is often associated with jaw muscle pain, tooth wear, and temporomandibular joint symptoms. In a recent study, researchers found that applying myofascial release—a hands-on technique in which a doctor of chiropractic uses manual pressure (with the hands, elbow, or a tool) to reduce muscle tension and improve tissue mobility—to the masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles led to significant improvements in jaw and neck pain, as well as maximal mouth opening, in individuals with bruxism. These findings support the use of myofascial release as part of a multimodal approach to managing bruxism.

Is Internet Addiction Linked to Psychological Distress?

Assessments completed by 7,278 university students revealed that 38.6% exhibited signs of Internet addiction, which was associated with higher levels of psychological distress, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. These findings suggest that strategies aimed at reducing time spent online could benefit college students, particularly those under treatment for psychological disorders.

Regular Bedtime Can Improve Blood Pressure.

Oregon Health & Science University researchers report that middle-aged adults with hypertension who shifted from irregular bedtimes to a consistent bedtime for just two weeks experienced similar drops in blood pressure—about 4 mmHg systolic and 3 mmHg diastolic—as would be expected by increased exercise or reduced sodium intake.

Gestational Diabetes Rate Up 36% from 2016.

Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy and can have long-term effects on a woman’s cardiovascular and metabolic health. From 2016 to 2024, its incidence increased each year, rising from 58 to 79 cases per 1,000 births. Researchers suggest this upward trend may reflect worsening cardiometabolic health among young adults, including poorer dietary patterns, lower physical activity levels, and rising obesity rates.

How to Fight Middle-Age Spread.

Middle age is often accompanied by gradual weight gain resulting from slowing metabolism, loss of muscle mass, and increased fat accumulation around internal organs that can raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions. To combat middle-aged spread, engage in a healthy lifestyle characterized by regular aerobic exercise, strength training, reduced sedentary time, a healthy diet, stress management, hydration, and sufficient sleep.

Ultra-Processed Foods May Stimulate Overeating in Young Adults.

In a recent trial, researchers found that that healthy young adults, aged 18-21, consume more calories and are more likely to eat when not hungry after two weeks on a diet high in ultra-processed foods—foods that include added sugars, fats, and salt to enhance flavor and prolong shelf life—than after two weeks on a diet containing few, if any, ultra processed goods.
