It's time for another Massage Monday!! Today we are going to discuss cupping. Have you ever seen those crazy dark circles on the backs of Olympic swimmers? Those are cupping marks. Don't worry, that's not a bad mark.
Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. This suction is thought to improve the flow of energy in the body and facilitate healing. When you get a massage the therapist pushes into the muscle and with cupping the area is being pulled in the opposite direction.
One of the oldest medical texts to mention cupping therapy is Eber’s papyrus (1550 B.C.) from Ancient Egypt. Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue.
I can do stationary cupping (which can leave the round marks) or gliding cupping. I can also do gliding cupping on the face to help bring fresh blood to the surface and potentially reduce the appearance of wrinkles. I also do gliding cupping on scar tissue which helps to break it up.
