The brain is one of the most important organs in the body, shaping how people think, feel, learn, and experience the world. Caring for brain health is an important part of overall well-being, and mental health plays a key role in how the brain functions each day.

During Brain Awareness Week, it is important to recognize the connection between brain health and mental health and to continue learning how both impact daily life. Supporting mental wellness, managing stress, and seeking resources when needed are all ways to care for the brain and overall health. 🧠

Catatonia is often misunderstood — and frequently misdiagnosed.

Though historically associated with schizophrenia, catatonia can occur alongside many mental and medical conditions, including bipolar disorder, depression, autism and neurological illnesses such as autoimmune encephalitis. When it isn’t recognized, individuals may receive treatments that don’t help — even though effective treatments exist.

Join NAMI for Ask the Expert: An Overview of Catatonia with Scott R. Beach, MD, psychiatrist at General Hospital and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Medical School.

This session will explore how catatonia presents, why it is commonly missed and the treatments that can help.

This month honors the achievements, leadership, and resilience of women throughout history. It is also an opportunity to recognize the realities many women continue to navigate, including their mental health.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, women are nearly twice as likely as men to experience depression. Factors such as social pressures, caregiving responsibilities, economic inequities, and trauma exposure all play a role in shaping women’s mental health experiences.

Recognizing women’s history also means acknowledging these challenges and advocating for equitable, accessible mental health care and support in every community.

Supporting someone through a difficult time does not require having all the answers. Often, the most meaningful support comes from showing up with patience, empathy, and a willingness to understand their experience at their own pace. Creating space for someone to feel heard and respected can strengthen trust and remind them they do not have to navigate challenges alone.

Offering support also means recognizing personal limits and prioritizing personal well-being along the way. Caring for others is important, but sustainable support starts with balance and self-awareness.
