Did you know that in 2023, 11.4% of U.S. adults (that’s over one in ten) took prescription medication for depression? For women, the number was even higher at 15.3%, compared to 7.4% for men.

Back-to-school season is here and so are the overloaded backpacks! While those books, binders, and lunchboxes might be essential, carrying too much (or wearing it the wrong way) can lead to sore backs, stiff necks, and slouchy posture.

Here’s the deal: your child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of their body weight. Heavier stuff should go closest to their back, and both straps should be worn. No one-shoulder slinging! Bonus points if the backpack has padded straps and a waist belt.

At our wellness center, we’ve got an awesome chiropractor who’s great with kids and loves helping them stay healthy and active. If your child’s already saying “my back hurts” or just dragging their bag like it’s full of bricks, it might be time for a quick posture and backpack check.
