Wednesday night was a special one at the Credit One Charleston Open.

Dr. Ashley Eason, a pediatric hematologist oncologist at MUSC, was recognized at center court alongside her patient, Ania Bonavito. They spent the evening meeting players, watching some incredible tennis, and taking it all in together.

Ania even had the chance to take part in the coin toss to start the match!

From diagnosis through treatment and beyond, relationships like these are such an important part of pediatric cancer care.

Some fun new arrivals just rolled into MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Summey Medical Pavilion.

Thanks to a Child’s Play charity grant, we now have four new Gamers Outreach “GO Karts” available for our patients.

With updated Xbox and Nintendo systems, kids can enjoy a familiar distraction that helps ease stress and makes our spaces feel a little more comfortable and normal.

They are already getting a lot of use!

Some of the excitement from the Credit One Charleston Open made its way into MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital yesterday!

Professional athletes competing on Daniel Island stopped by to spend time with our patients and their families, sharing conversations, playing air hockey and talking about their favorite sports.

Visits like these may seem small, but they bring so much joy throughout the hospital.

Every day, our Child Life team does incredible work supporting patients through play, encouragement, and connection.

During Child Life Week, that work came to life during our indoor Garden Party.

Slime, popcorn, paint, and lots of smiles were a reminder of what this important team brings to the hospital experience for our patients.

Before Gunner ever took his first breath, his family learned he would face serious heart challenges.

Diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), he had open heart surgery at just four days old at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, led by Dr. Kavarana.

Now, Gunner is home, approaching his first birthday, and doing well!

His family says the PCICU team helped guide them through an overwhelming time by staying connected, supportive, and focused on their son from start to finish.

A pediatric cancer diagnosis affects the whole family, including siblings.

This Child Life Month, we’re recognizing Michelle Vandermaas, a Certified Child Life Specialist at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital who supports families through every step.

Here, she’s in the Level 10 playroom with Anna, a three-year-old oncology patient, and her big sister, Ava.

“I support children from diagnosis through treatment, helping them understand what they’re experiencing while also supporting siblings throughout the family’s journey.”

When families look back on a hospital stay, they remember the people who made them feel supported and safe.

Zachary Radcliffe, a nurse in the PICU at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, left that kind of lasting impact on the family of a 15-month-old patient.

“Zach advocated for our son when he was in pain and made sure he stayed comfortable,” they said. “No one before him has ever set the bar so high on care for those in need.”

We are proud to recognize Zach as our January 2026 DAISY Award winner!

A hospital can feel like a very big place when you're a child. So much of it is unfamiliar, and it can quickly become overwhelming.

Our Child Life team helps change that experience. With play, preparation and emotional support, they help kids understand their care and feel a sense of control in moments that might otherwise feel scary.

Child Life specialist Amelia Brackett shared how donor‑supported tools help her bring comfort, clarity and confidence to the children and families she cares for every day.
