Kids at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital had the chance to step away from their rooms last week to celebrate National Teddy Bear Day.

With help from The NASCAR Foundation and volunteers from Hendrick Automotive Group, they built and decorated wooden race cars and received gift boxes with their own Speedy Bear.

This event was part of a larger effort to bring comfort to children in hospitals across North America, and we’re proud to be part of it!

September is Women in Medicine Month, and we’re proud to highlight the women across MUSC who are making a difference every day.

First up is Dr. Neena Champaigne, Division Chief for Medical Genetics and Genomics. She leads newborn screening efforts and specializes in diagnosing and treating metabolic disorders in children.

She considers herself an “Interventional Geneticist,” using tools like diet, medication, enzyme replacement and gene therapy to help improve outcomes for young patients.

MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital has a team of specially trained hospital dogs who work with staff to support patients and families through therapeutic interactions.

Baskin was the first to join the program in 2020. Trained by Canine Assistants in Georgia, he helps children during procedures, long hospital stays and clinic visits. He also plays an important role in supporting our care teams.

Preterm birth is the leading cause of complications and death in newborns and South Carolina has one of the highest rates in the country.

MUSC researchers are working to change that. Their new study shows that a part of the immune system called the complement system may be triggering early labor.

By blocking it with a drug, they were able to reduce inflammation and protect both the mother and baby. This discovery could lead to new treatments that help more babies arrive safely and on time.

When children can’t see clearly, it can affect everything from how they learn to how they connect with the world.

That’s why Dr. James Hill and his MUSC team went to Belize to help improve pediatric vision care where it’s needed most.

They worked with local providers to diagnose and treat conditions like congenital cataracts and retinal dystrophy, especially in babies and young children.

Even before pregnancy begins, there are steps women can take to support a healthy outcome for themselves and their baby.

Dr. Rebecca Wineland, maternal-fetal medicine specialist at MUSC, joined host Bobbi Conner on a recent Health Focus episode to talk about the value of preconception check-ups.

From managing diabetes to coordinating care for heart conditions, these visits help reduce risks and build a plan for a safer pregnancy.

Meet Ethan Bowman and his mom, Brittney.

At 28 weeks, a routine ultrasound revealed a suspected congenital heart defect. During delivery, Brittney experienced a severe hemorrhage, and both she and Ethan needed immediate, life-saving care.

Ethan spent 72 days in the NICU at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the NICU nurses, pediatric cardiology team, and other MUSC care team members, both are now home and doing well!

Early detection can make a life-changing difference, especially in a child’s first few days.

This Newborn Screening Awareness Month, we’re recognizing the role of early screening and genetic testing in identifying rare conditions before symptoms appear.

When something is detected, these screenings help families and care teams take action quickly and confidently.
