Over the past week, our Heavy Rescue and Support Companies have been refining their skills in both familiar and advanced rescue techniques. North Charleston’s diverse industrial landscape presents the potential for highly complex rescue scenarios, requiring a high level of preparedness. Through continuous training, our teams ensure they remain sharp, adaptable, and ready to respond to any challenge they may face.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Push-In” Ceremony for New Ladder Truck

NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, July 7th, 2025— Fire Chief Joseph E. Munn is pleased to announce that the North Charleston Fire Department has added Ladder 202 to its fleet. The new ladder was blessed by the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy and put into service via a “push-in” ceremony by Mayor Reginald L. Burgess, members of Council, Executive Department and the North Charleston Fire Department.

The “push-in” ceremony is a traditional firefighter ritual where a new fire engine is ceremoniously pushed into the fire station. This tradition started to symbolize when firefighters had horse-drawn equipment and returned from a call, the animals were unable to back into the station. This required members to detach the horses and push the equipment into the bay.

Ladder 202 is the first tractor-drawn aerial (also known as a tiller) for the North Charleston Fire Department. Built by Pierce, one of the largest producers of fire apparatus, and purchased through Spartan Fire and Emergency Apparatus, Inc, the ladder was designed by the North Charleston Fire Department’s Truck Committee with special focus of safety and performance in the City. A tractor-drawn aerial will help with maneuverability in tight spaces around the City of North Charleston and other mutual aid areas. In addition, the new ladder will help with efficient positioning during an emergency and has increased compartment space for equipment.

“We are thankful to have this new piece of apparatus”, said Chief Munn “to serve the citizens of North Charleston and surrounding areas.”

Prepare for potental heavy rain and flash flooding! Follow professional sites like Charleston County Government and US National Weather Service Charleston SC!

Charleston County Emergency Management officials are monitoring Tropical Storm Chantal as it continues to approach the S.C. coastline. A Tropical Storm Watch and High Surf Advisory are currently in effect.

According to the latest information from the National Weather Service, the storm is currently located off the southeast U.S. coast and is expected to make landfall in the northern part of Charleston County Sunday morning, producing heavy rain, strong winds, and rip currents. The greatest impacts are expected between 10 p.m. tonight and 8 a.m. tomorrow.

With the enhanced risk of rip currents and dangerous conditions throughout the weekend, the public is encouraged to remain off the water.

Rain totals are expected to near 4 inches, with up to 6 inches possible in some areas. Heavy rainfall could produce periods of flash flooding, particularly coinciding with today’s 5 p.m. high tide.

Wind gusts could reach 45 mph along the coast, and potentially stronger across high span brides. As a reminder, Charleston County does not have the authority to close bridges. Click here to review the county’s bridge procedures during high winds.https://www.charlestoncounty.org/departments/emergency-management/files/BridgeProceduresHighWinds.pdf

Due to the likelihood of strong winds, isolated power outages and downed tree limbs are possible.

Residents are encouraged to follow Charleston County Government on social media, download the 2024 Hurricane Guide, and sign up for the Citizen’s Alert System. CharlestonCounty.org/EM

For the most accurate and up-to-date weather forecasts, residents should stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service Charleston websites, as well as local media and South Carolina Emergency Management Division’s Emergency Manager app.

Be this …

The Fourth of July marks a time of celebration and a great time to gather with family and friends. But every year, thousands of people end up in the emergency room for injuries sustained from mishandling live or misfired consumer fireworks. “Children ages 10 to 14 had the highest rate of fireworks injury, with more than one-third (36%) of the victims of fireworks injuries under age 15” according to the National Fire Protection Association. Additionally, fireworks cause approximately 19,500 fires resulting in $100 million in direct property damage. The North Charleston Fire Department wants to share some tips to celebrate the Fourth of July safely.

Start with observing local fireworks laws.

The City of North Charleston fireworks ordinance allows fireworks discharge from 9 am to 11:30 pm throughout the year. Hours are extended for the July 4th holiday, from 9 am on July 4th to 1 am on July 5th.
– Discharging fireworks from a vehicle is prohibited.
-Discharging fireworks on land without consent is prohibited.
– Discharging fireworks towards any structure, animal, or person is prohibited and very dangerous.

How to safely use fireworks:
– Identify a “fireworks zone” with markers that are a safe distance away from structures, people, and animals
– Read and follow the directions on each firework.
– Always have a responsible adult designated as the “firework lighter”.
– Light one firework at a time.
– Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
– Keep a water bucket or hose nearby in case of fire.
– Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.

Here are some safe alternatives for celebrating the Fourth of July:
– Use glow sticks, confetti poppers, or colored streamers instead of sparklers.
– Red, white, and blue silly string is fun for all ages.
– Outdoor movie night: Set up a screen and projector. Don’t forget the bug spray! – Make a patriotic craft with the family.
– Make the fourth a birthday party for America – don’t forget the cake!
