Honoring the Past. Serving the Present. Protecting the Future.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we reflect on the responsibility we carry—to honor those who came before us while serving today’s families with excellence and integrity.

In 1932, during a time when opportunities for Black entrepreneurs were limited and our communities leaned heavily on one another, William Mallory Smith founded our funeral home with a simple but powerful mission: to serve families with dignity, compassion, and excellence. His work was more than a business, it was a calling rooted in care for the community.

That legacy was faithfully carried forward by his daughter, Margaret Smith Connor, whose strength, leadership, and commitment ensured that the foundation laid in 1932 would not only endure, but flourish. At a time when female leadership in business was far from common, she stood as a quiet trailblazer; preserving both the integrity of the profession and the trust of the families we serve.

We honor and thank them both for their vision and, most importantly, Mrs. Connor, for entrusting Bryan McNeal, Jr. to carry their legacy forward. That trust was embraced with humility, responsibility, and a deep understanding of the sacred role funeral service plays in our community.

Now, after 94 years, we stand as one of the oldest funeral homes still operating in the Tri-County area. That longevity is not by chance. It is the result of generations of faithful service, strong family leadership, and a community that continues to place its confidence in us.

In that same spirit of legacy and continuity, Bryan McNeal has encouraged his children, S. Gervais McNeal and Breelyn McNeal, to join the business, preparing them to become the next chapter in this story. Their involvement represents not only the continuation of a family tradition, but a renewed commitment to innovation, compassion, and exceptional service for the generations ahead.

Black History Month reminds us that history is not only something we study, it is something we live. Every family we serve, every life we honor, and every service we provide adds another chapter to a story that began in 1932.

In Charleston and beyond, our history reminds us that legacy matters. We remain committed to preserving stories, supporting families, and walking with our community through every season of life and remembrance.

As a family-owned business, we remain committed to carrying forward the legacy of compassionate care, professional excellence, and community leadership. We are honored to serve, grateful for the trust placed in us, and dedicated to continuing this work for generations to come.

From our family to yours, thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives for nearly a century.

For many Black funeral directors, this work has never been “just a job.” It has been a calling. Passed down through families, learned through mentorship, and guided by faith.

Black funeral homes have historically stood at the intersection of compassion and advocacy, ensuring our loved ones were honored with dignity in life’s most sacred moments. We are humbled to continue that tradition of care.
