Dr. Melanie Chinchilla, a Clinical Psychology (PhD) Alumna, and Dr. David Kosson, Professor Emeritus in the Psychology Department, coauthored an article with Dr. Dennis Reidy (Georgia State University) arguing that psychopathy warrants recognition as a major public health concern.

Based on evidence that psychopathic traits appear to confer heightened risk for three recognized public health problems (substance misuse, sexual risk behaviors, and violence) in samples that vary in age, gender, ethnicity/race, and nationality, they argue that psychopathy merits greater consideration by public health professionals.

Their paper “Psychopathy is a neglected public health problem” was recently published by Frontiers in Psychiatry.

Jared Jacobson Cherry, a third-year Psychology (PhD) student, recently published a new research article titled Feasibility and Potential Effects of Mental Imagery Training on Subjective Cognitive Function and Brain Connectivity in People with Parkinson’s Disease: A Randomized Pilot Trial.

This study examined a mental imagery–based cognitive training program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease, exploring both how practical the program is to implement and its potential benefits.

The team measured outcomes such as brain connectivity using fMRI, objective cognitive performance, and participants’ own perceptions of their thinking and memory.

Congratulations, Jared, on this important accomplishment!

As we begin this new year together, we’re embracing thriving as our guiding word of the year.

Thriving means more than simply getting by — it’s about growing, feeling supported, and finding purpose in what we do each day.

✔️For our students, it’s discovering confidence in learning and curiosity.
✔️For our faculty, it’s fostering innovation, scholarship, and meaningful connections.
✔️For our staff, it’s feeling valued, empowered, and equipped to do our best work.

Throughout the year, we’ll highlight moments, stories, and resources that help our community thrive — academically, professionally, and personally.

Let’s continue to lift one another, celebrate progress (big and small), and create an environment where every member of our community can flourish.

Here’s to a year of thriving — together!
