Dr. Nastassia Riser, Dr. Courtney Beussink, Dr. Steven Miller (Professor), and Dr. Dave Kosson (Professor Emeritus), in the Psychology Department, recently published a study based on Dr. Riser’s dissertation. They asked inmates—who had been assessed with the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised—to report how they felt before and after being asked to remember a sad experience in their lives. They measured emotional attention bias before and after the sadness induction.

Contrary to traditional views of psychopathy, men with more psychopathic traits showed a greater increase in sadness than men with fewer psychopathic traits.
Additionally, psychopathy was linked to an increased bias to avoid paying attention to sad faces that appeared only following the sadness induction.

These findings suggest that people with psychopathic traits can respond to mood inductions and may engage in dynamic coping to reduce sadness, which can make them seem emotionally unresponsive. If these findings are confirmed, they could imply that it might be possible to access emotions in people with psychopathy.
