“We’ve finally broken through the taboo and allowed ourselves to question why we’re doing what we’re doing if it’s not working,” he said. Boys, just like girls and nonbinary children, need care, compassion and validation.

Awareness of boys’ mental health needs is step one to arresting the male su***de crisis. “Parents need to know that being male is the biggest risk factor for su***de,” Reeves said. “The chances of your son taking his life by su***de are about four times higher than your daughter’s.”

Delighting in our boys is the next (and perhaps most essential) step, Reichert said. Instead of focusing on our boys’ behaviors and flaws, he encourages parents to “find a way through all the insecurities, doubts and worries you have and locate the place in your heart where you can be delighted with your son.” Spend dedicated time with him, doing what he likes, without lecturing, scolding, or coercing.”

Being male is the highest risk factor for su***de, and boys today are struggling.

“Cannabis is portrayed as a relatively harmless substance, but the data amongst teenagers does not support that,” Dr. Meisel said. “It’s shown to impact IQ. It’s associated with the onset of psychotic syndrome. It’s associated with worsening mental health conditions, depression and anxiety, and the onset of those conditions as well.”

1. Make your rules and expectations clear.
2. Do your research on the potential risks.
3. Be careful about sharing your own experiences with cannabis.
4. Ask open ended questions, especially about their friends.
5. Keep the discussion brief, as well as warm.
6. Be creative about your conversation openings.

Keep it brief, do your homework … and maybe don’t share your own teenage pot stories.

Frequent use of social media could be reshaping how adolescents' brains develop, a new study found. Those who checked their platforms more often were more likely to be sensitive to general social rewards and punishments, according to the study published Tuesday.

Teens are prone to social media use, and much of their interaction with peers takes place online — but those habits may be impacting their development. A new study found adolescents who checked their social media frequently were more sensitive to feedback.
