The first photo was taken in 2017, when I was a new charge nurse at North Kansas City Hospital, just a year away from obtaining my BSN. I was eager but uncertain, not yet knowing the full extent of the challenges or triumphs that lay ahead. Fast forward to 2025, and I’m standing in the same restroom, but this time as an Assistant Clinical Professor, Adult-Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, and Doctor of Nursing Practice. It’s an incredible honor to return to the organization that laid the foundation for my success, now with the privilege of educating the next generation of nurses.

The journey from 2017 to 2025 wasn’t always easy. There were countless moments of doubt, long nights of studying, and times when I wasn’t sure if I could keep going. But each challenge I faced taught me something valuable, and through perseverance and hard work, I’ve been able to transform those obstacles into triumphs.

It’s truly humbling to be back in a place that helped shape my career, now able to give back by inspiring and mentoring future nurses. To anyone just starting their journey: remember, growth isn’t linear. There will be setbacks, but each one brings you closer to your goals. Keep pushing, keep believing in yourself, and never forget how far you've come.

I’m happy to share that I have started a new Palliative and Supportive Care Nurse Practitioner! This new position is a natural evolution of my nursing career, which began 14 years ago as a Hospice LPN. I’m thrilled to continue making a difference in the lives of patients and families.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to remain within Saint Luke's Health System. As I reflect on my role as House Supervisor at St. Luke's Hospital, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the complexities of patient care from a system-wide perspective. While I will undoubtedly miss the leadership responsibilities and the opportunity to collaborate across multiple departments, this experience has prepared me for my new role. As a House Supervisor, I managed the overall patient experience, ensuring safety, addressing emergencies, and navigating challenging decisions in real-time. These experiences sharpened my ability to handle complex ethical dilemmas, prioritize patient needs, and engage in therapeutic conversations—all of which will be invaluable as I transition into palliative care.

Palliative care, or supportive medicine, is a specialized field that focuses on providing additional care to patients with severe or chronic illnesses, regardless of their prognosis. In this gratifying role, a skilled team of physicians, APPS, nurses, social workers, and other specialists helps patients and their families navigate illness with compassion and dignity.

In palliative care, we provide comfort, emotional support, and guidance through the healthcare system, working collaboratively with the patient's physicians. I look forward to providing this crucial care to patients, whether during a hospital stay, after diagnosis, or following discharge.

I’m honored to continue my journey with the Saint Luke’s family in this new capacity, where I’ll be able to integrate my experiences to further advocate for the comfort and well-being of our patients.

Today, I had the privilege of speaking with the dedicated staff at Clay County Public Health Center as part of their Munch and Learn education series. My session, titled 'Medical Mistrust: Understanding the Historical Context and Path Forward,' focused on fostering awareness around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. During our engaging discussion, we delved into the origins of medical mistrust, particularly within minority communities, and examined the critical role healthcare providers play in ensuring culturally competent, equitable care that upholds the dignity of every patient.

Good morning! I hope you are well. I wanted to offer a quick word about Sankofa. Sankofa is a bird in Africa that looks behind itself as it moves forward. As you are on this journey for self-optimization, take moments to reflect on the person you've been, the different phases of your life, and how you've changed. No need to dwell on your past but try to see the lessons as you reflect and honor how that person you were has become the person you are today and the person you will be 5 years from now. I'm proud with you! Happy for you! I am inspired by you! Continue striving for success.

-Gary
