Maternal Child Health has recently identified an increase in car seats that do not meet federal safety standards, many of which were reportedly purchased through Temu or TikTok Shop. Seats that are counterfeit are not properly tested and often disintegrate during a crash. Reputable seats should have multiple stickers and warning labels, without typos or misprints. Two weeks in the hospital, waiting for answers, can feel like forever. For Helen, a patient on the Oncology/Medical-Surgical Unit, the uncertainty weighed heavily and the boredom crept in.

Sensing Helen’s growing restlessness and worry, Halea VanGundy, CNA, decided something needed to change. Halea and Summer Fude, BSN, RN, along with other staff, wanted to lift Helen’s spirits. Her room was transformed with balloons, music, mocktails and laughter. What had been a space of waiting became, if only for a while, a space of joy.

“I didn’t know what was happening when they came in with balloons and singing,” Helen said later. “But they put a smile on my face. They wanted to show they cared, and they really brightened my day.”
