Is shoveling deeper snow less dangerous for your lower back?

An interesting observation after the Blizzard of 2026. Many people who came to the office this past week were sore and stiff from their shoulders to their lower back after shoveling snow. However, I saw fewer acute and severe lower back injuries after this storm. I conclude that with deeper snow and higher snowbanks, people tended to stay more upright when shoveling, generally adopting a better ergonomic posture. This likely contributed to muscle stiffness and soreness from the shoulders to the lumbar spine, but spared the lower lumbar spine from the usual strain caused by shoveling snow.
