According to the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, only 1 in 4 people who were classified as needing substance use treatment in the past year actually received it.

This means that 75% of people who needed treatment did not access it.

Common barriers include cost, lack of insurance, limited treatment availability, transportation issues, and concerns about stigma or confidentiality.

Improving access to care starts with understanding where the gaps are — and why they exist.

In May 2024, at least 38 overdoses in Chicago were linked to medetomidine, a dangerous animal sedative not approved for human use — and not reversed by naloxone.
