🎄 Holiday Mental Health Tip 🎄

Give yourself permission to set boundaries.

The holidays can bring joy and stress, sometimes at the same time.
It’s okay to:
• Say no to events that feel overwhelming
• Leave early without explaining yourself
• Protect your energy and rest when you need to

Boundaries aren’t selfish, they’re a form of self-care. 💛
Your mental health matters this season.

✨ What’s one boundary you’re honoring this week?

🌲 Simple Winter Self-Care for Mental Wellness ❄️

The holiday season can be magical… and overwhelming. Here are gentle, doable ways to support your mental health this winter:

✨ Get morning light.
Even 5–10 minutes by a window or a quick step outside helps regulate mood and energy.

✨ Slow down with warm rituals.
A cup of tea, a cozy blanket, a quiet moment before bed, warmth calms the nervous system.

✨ Keep movement simple.
Winter walks, stretching, or a few minutes of yoga can lift mood without feeling like a chore.

✨ Protect your peace.
It’s okay to say “no” to extra events or traditions that feel draining. Boundaries are self-care.

✨ Stay connected.
Reach out to a friend, join a community event, or schedule something small you can look forward to.

✨ Nourish consistently.
Balanced meals, snacks, and hydration help support mood and reduce stress.

✨ Create a “comfort corner.”
A small space in your home with soft lighting, a blanket, a book, or music that soothes you.

✨ Check in with yourself.
Pause once a day to ask: What do I need right now? A breath? Rest? Support?

You deserve care, especially during the busy season.
Golden Oak Health is here when you need us.

Falling Back, Not Falling Apart: Coping with the Seasonal Shift

Daylight Savings Time can throw off more than just your sleep schedule, shorter days and longer nights often bring a dip in mood, energy, and motivation. If you notice yourself feeling “off” this time of year, you’re not alone. Seasonal depression (also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD) affects millions each year as our bodies adjust to less light and colder weather.

Here are a few simple strategies that can make a big difference:

Get morning light exposure. Step outside within 30 minutes of waking, even on cloudy days.

Use a light therapy lamp. 20–30 minutes daily can help regulate your circadian rhythm.

Move your body. Gentle exercise, especially outdoors, boosts serotonin and energy.

Stay connected. Reach out to friends, join a group, or schedule regular check-ins.

Prioritize rest and routine. Consistent sleep and daily structure help stabilize mood.

Seek support early. If you notice changes in motivation, appetite, or concentration, reach out, therapy and medication can help restore balance.

You deserve to feel grounded and well, even when the days get darker. 💛

🌍 World Mental Health Day — October 10, 2025
💚 This Years Theme: “Access to services – Mental health in catastrophes and emergencies”

When the world feels uncertain, our mental health matters more than ever. Disasters, conflict, and crises don’t just disrupt our surroundings, they can deeply affect our minds, emotions, and sense of safety.

This year’s theme reminds us that access to mental health care is essential, especially in times of crisis. Everyone deserves the chance to heal, rebuild, and find support when life feels overwhelming.

At Golden Oak Health, we stand with those working to make mental health care accessible, compassionate, and trauma-informed, no matter the circumstance.

💬 Let’s use today to:
✅ Start conversations about mental health in times of crisis
✅ Advocate for access to services for all
✅ Remind each other that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness

You are not alone. 💚
If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out, help is here, and healing is possible.

Meet Jen!

Jennifer is a dual board-certified nurse practitioner in Family Practice and Psychiatric Mental Health. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Iowa in 2019 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Iowa Wesleyan College in 2013.

Jen believes healthcare works best as a team effort. She loves creating a space where patients feel comfortable sharing, asking questions, and making decisions together. Her goal is to help each person feel supported in ways that fit their unique needs.

Outside the clinic, Jen enjoys a full and active life with her husband, their three rescue dogs, and her close-knit family. She values the time she shares with her four sisters and parents, whether it’s a big family gathering or a lively, competitive board game night. Jen also finds balance through painting, staying active on the pickleball court, and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
