THROWBACK THURSDAY: Remember Arnie? In October 2016, this 90-year-old Arkansas Hospice patient and former swim coach returned to a familiar place – a pool that he helped design 40 years earlier. These photos capture the sparkle in Arnie’s eyes, and the joy he experienced when returning to the water. As you can see, Arnie still had some strength – sometimes kicking so powerfully that his helpers, including a former student, sometimes had to close their eyes. Arnie’s wife of 62 years cheered from the sidelines along with Arkansas Hospice staff and others gathered to witness this remarkable man, making the most of each moment. Fittingly, this wonderful story was among the top 10 stories shared in 2016 as part of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's "Moments of Life" Campaign. What a wonderful tribute to Arnie and the Arkansas Hospice (currently becoming LifeTouch Health) team members who made his return to the pool possible!

LIFETOUCH SERVICE AWARDS: Last week at the Clinton Presidential Library, the inaugural Shellam Flake LifeTouch Service Awards celebrated a legacy of light and exceptional service as Arkansas Hospice is becoming LifeTouch Health. During this special event, awards were presented to team members, volunteers and other community partners who were nominated by colleagues for the unique ways in which they embody our mission. More than 80 nominations were submitted with winners selected by a committee from the Board of Directors.

Please join us in congratulating this year’s recipients of the LifeTouch Health service awards:

• Community Beacon Award (corporate or community partner): First Security Bank
• Dawn of Service Award (exceptional young volunteer): Saiyahn Sumpter, volunteer for the Conway Area Office
• Heart of the Sunrise Award (tenured volunteers): Phyllis Brents, Rochelle Greenwood and Carole Sroka, volunteers for the Greater Little Rock Area Office
• Spark of Light Award (exceptional service from a new team member): Hannah Chapman, CNA for the Conway Area office
• Light in Action Award (direct patient and family care, CNA): Inez Spencer Whitaker, CNA for the Monticello Area Office
• Rising Light Clinical Excellence Award (direct patient and family care – clinical): Tanya Lee, RN, Hospice Care Case Manager for the Russellville Area Office
• Light for the Journey Award (direct patient and family care, non-clinical): Michael Reece, chaplain for the Conway Area Office
• Pillars of Light Award (mission support): Raymond Sanders, unit secretary at the Ottenheimer Inpatient Center
• Guiding Light Leadership Award: Melissa Reynolds, RN, clinical director
• Legacy of Light - Lifetime Achievement Award: Anita Deal, RN, recently retired vice president and chief clinical officer

An additional highlight of the evening was a personal video message from keynote speaker Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter who received hospice care at his Georgia home for more than a year and a half before his death this past Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

Congratulations to all nominees, finalists and honorees – and thank you for touching the lives of our fellow Arkansans with love and compassion!
