Alice LaVern Rohrer

Alice LaVern (Rupel) Rohrer, 101, passed away at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, Indiana, on February 16, 2026.

She was born March 31, 1924 in Walkerton, Indiana to (Alfred) Byron Rupel and (Eliza) Edith Rohrer Rupel. She was one of five girls, including her identical twin. During the Great Depression, the girls helped save the family farm and were raised with a frugal “can-do” attitude. They had stories of picking blueberries as well as picking small cucumbers to sell to the Heinz Company. Alice graduated from Manchester College, in North Manchester, Indiana in 1947 with a degree in home economics. She taught school for several years, including managing a school cafeteria. In the early 1950s, she established the home economics department at Ashland College, Ashland, Ohio.

Alice met (Martin) Alpheus Rohrer at Manchester College and married him on July 1, 1950. He took his bride to his home in North Lima, in eastern Ohio. They were married for 62 years until his passing on December 26, 2012. They had four children. Alice was an accomplished seamstress and taught her children to sew. In 1972, the family took a memorable vacation spending 53 days traveling by RV to visit America’s western national parks and her sister, Lois, in Oregon. Alice was an avid gardener who got the whole family involved in her gardening adventures. She grew a wide variety of vegetables and preserved them to feed the family. The family planted an annual commercial vegetable garden including over 400 tomato plants, an abundant number of cucumbers, peas, green beans, and corn with staggered maturity dates, selling to local farm markets. All of this gardening led to her holding an Ohio canning license in order to legally sell her canned goods in the community. When she was in her 90s, as a Timbercrest resident, Alice and her twin sister were still growing vegetables for marketing at the North Manchester Farmers’ Market.

Immersed in the local church, Zion Hill Church of the Brethren, Alice was a deaconess, recording clerk for business meetings, church historian, Women’s Fellowship participant, church building designer, Sunday School superintendent, and Vacation Bible School superintendent. In 1972, she wrote and directed a play celebrating the centennial year at Zion Hill Church. Alice also wrote and directed a community pageant highlighting the history of North Lima, Ohio, during America’s Bicentennial celebration in 1976. She was a facilitator for Friendly Town, placing urban Cleveland children with rural families for a cross-cultural experience.

In 2010, Alice coordinated the sale of the farm and the move to bring her husband and herself back to Indiana. They moved into a neighborhood home at Timbercrest. Eventually, she lived in assisted living and then in healthcare.

Alice is survived by her children, Stanley (Drema) Rohrer, Beavercreek, Ohio; Edith Rohrer, Warsaw, Indiana; Thelma Rohrer, North Manchester, Indiana; and Norman (Melinda) Rohrer, Verona, Wisconsin. She is survived by four grandsons, Scott (Kaitlin), Todd, Nate (Dani), and Luke; and three great-grandchildren, Emma, Henry, and William. Alice is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alpheus, her sisters, Lois (Rupel) Tuinstra, Annabel Rupel, Glea (Rupel) Smith, her twin sister Esther Rupel, and son-in-law James Adams.

Services will be private. Burial will be in Zion Hill Cemetery, Columbiana, OH. Arrangements are entrusted to McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, Indiana.

For those who wish to honor the memory of Alice Rohrer, memorial gifts may be given to Heifer International, 1 World Ave., Little Rock, AR 72202 or a charity of your choice.

Edward "Ed" George Miller

Professor Emeritus Edward G. Miller, 91, finished his remarkable journey on February 8, 2026, in North Manchester, Indiana.

Ed was born on March 29, 1934, at the family farm in Columbiana, Ohio, to Adin L. Miller and Mabel (Metzler) Miller. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Martha A. (Showalter) Miller of North Manchester, IN, daughter Michele Marie Miller Bever (Steven Bever) of Hastings, NE, son Michael Kenton Miller (Stephanie Gall Miller) of Henderson, NV, and much-loved grandchildren Carly Jean Miller (Henderson, NV) and Zachary Kenton Miller (Henderson, NV). He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Donald B. Miller.

A lifelong scholar, Ed graduated from Columbiana High School as salutatorian and from Manchester College (University) with distinction (1956). He earned his PhD in organic chemistry following graduate studies with research director Dr. Jerrold Meinwald at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Returning to Manchester University in 1960, he began his 38-year career in undergraduate teaching, shaping lives of students as they found their ways into science, health, and service careers. He served 27 years as Chair of the Chemistry Department.

In the 1960s, Ed completed postdoctoral studies at Princeton University with Dr. Kurt Mislow, under a United States Public Health Fellowship, and was a Summer Research Associate at the University of California Berkeley with Dr. Frederick Jensen, under a National Science Foundation grant.

He found his passion for international travel and service after college when he and fiancée Martha Showalter participated in a Church of the Brethren (COB) international work camp in Llano Grande, Ecuador, led by Claude and June Wolfe. For his M.U. 1971-72 sabbatical, Ed, Martha and children lived in Dumaguete, Philippines, for 10 months, where he was a visiting professor of chemistry at Silliman University. This trip-around-the-world experience included visits to Hawaii and Japan on the way to the Philippines, a three-month return journey through seventeen countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, and culminating in a trip across the Atlantic Ocean from England to New York City on the S.S. France. These adventures and explorations of world cultures were life-changing experiences for the entire family.

Professor Miller sought to bring some of these same life-changing opportunities to his students. In 1981, he initiated the Manchester University Medical Practicum course, a popular January term, 3-week service-learning experience designed for students considering careers in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, etc. Students gain hands-on experience alongside health professionals (many are M.U. alumni) to bring health services to underserved areas. He directed 19 Medical Practicum trips in six Central American countries and participated in six additional trips. Including the 40th Medical Practicum trip in January 2026, 482 Manchester students, along with 160 different health care providers and 73 other staffers have served more than 54,000 patients since the practicum’s inception.

Ed enjoyed his experiences as a Brethren Colleges Abroad (BCA) Director at Hokusei University in Sapporo, Japan, and as an Interim BCA Director in Xalapa, Mexico. His international service continued into retirement, contributing to a COB Work Camp in Ecuador in 2003 and a Manchester COB Work Camp in San Rafael, El Salvador in 2007.

Humbly accepted, his scholarship and service were recognized throughout his career, as recipient of the CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Silver Medalist Award, a Manchester University Alumni Service Award, the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service (sponsored by Ft. Wayne NBC), the Manchester College Citation for Responsible Philanthropy, and a Manchester University Alumni Honor Award.

Ed’s travel experiences, including world travels after retirement, took him - and Martha - to 49 states, 82 countries, and 6 continents. His wide-ranging interests included music, reading and puzzles of all kinds; gardening, camping and bird watching; making homemade breads, soups, hummus and applesauce; researching chemistry genealogies; fully supporting his life partner, Martha, in all her endeavors; and creating opportunities for the whole family to explore, together, the natural features, flora and fauna, and cultural history of a destination.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held March 28, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Manchester Church of the Brethren, 1306 Beckley Street, North Manchester, Indiana. Visitation will take place following the service.

For those who wish to honor the memory of Ed Miller, memorial contributions may be made to M.U. at 604 East College Ave., North Manchester, Indiana 46962:

Michael "Terry" Teren Riley

Michael T. Riley, 82, formerly of Lansing, Michigan, passed away peacefully after a long battle with PTSD and more recently, lung cancer. He was born June 27, 1944 to Herbert and Elaine (Ross) Riley. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He attended Lansing Sexton High School, graduating in 1963 and then Lansing Community College for his freshman year. He joined the United States Naval Reserve, attending training at both North Carolina and California.

He served two tours in Vietnam in the USN Construction Battalion. The CB's, in those days, served in the most dangerous battle sites, building bridges over remote waterways, subject to heavy sniper gunfire. There were typically no battle fronts in the Vietnam War. Upon the completion of his first tour, he volunteered for a second tour which lasted until near the end of the war. The only story he ever told of that second tour was, while deploying to a battle site by truck, awakening from unconsciousness due to an improved explosive device, finding the head of the driver in his lap. He never told any other story over the next fifty years, refusing to discuss any other incidents.

Michael was a survivor, having suffered several traumatic childhood incidents as a child prior to his Vietnam service. He suffered a ten-day coma as the result of a bicycle accident resulting in the loss of some mental capabilities. He witnessed the death of his dog on a major highway, then being brought home by a Michigan State Trooper. His closest friend then suddenly dropped dead at 21-the cause of which was never determined.

In spite of those traumas, he was the caregiver for our mother who was agoraphobic, having never left the house in over fifty years. During those ten years, he went completely "off the grid"-no driver's license, no I.D., no formal address, no possessions, no income. He never filed for social security or veteran's benefits until we became his caregivers. He remembered his social security number, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to collect his benefits.

During the time prior to becoming our mother's caregiver, he delivered handbills to the front porches of residents of some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. For over thirty years he lived on minimum wage in a bordering house in the same city.

We believe that he survived a very difficult life by quiet determination accompanied by a degree of isolation. At the same time, he is a symbol of what is wrong with the benefits system. His total net income was $7,000 after being required to pay over $4,000 annually to Medicare because he didn't register at the appropriate time.

He was preceded in death by numerous cousins and is survived by a brother and sister-in-law.

At a later time, a private military honor service will be held. Donations can be made to the North Manchester American Legion, Post 286, 215 E Main St, North Manchester, IN 46962. Donations will also be matched from a private donor advised fund.

The family of Michael Teren "Terry" Riley has entrusted McKee Mortuary with care and final arrangements.
