Holiday shopping? Let's make those gifts work double duty! 🎄

Speech-language pathologists recommend classic toys like books, blocks, and dolls because they promote language development, build conversation skills, and support pretend play.

Here are our TOP picks for gifts that support speech and language development:

📚 BOOKS (ages 0-5+)
The #1 toy we recommend! Books are multi-purpose language learning tools that help with labeling, predictions, questions, vocabulary, and pre-literacy skills like rhyming.

🧩 TOYS WITH PIECES (ages 2-5)
They facilitate turn-taking, requesting, following directions, labeling vocabulary, and descriptive language.

🏠 OPEN-ENDED PLAY TOYS (ages 2-6)
Help develop pretend play, joint attention, imitation skills, and speech sound acquisition.

🐄 FARM/ZOO ANIMALS (ages 1-5)
Animals are excellent for developing pretend play and learning action words like eat, drink, jump, fly, dance, and sleep.

💭 BUBBLES (all ages!)
Bubbles invite children to engage through turn-taking and eye contact—both required skills before learning to talk. They're perfect for practicing words like "up," "down," "open," "blow," "pop"!

⚽ BALLS (ages 1-5+)
Ball play naturally incorporates action words like "go," "bounce," "throw," "catch," "roll," and teaches turn-taking and social sharing.

🎨 ART SUPPLIES (ages 2-5+)
They are perfect for practicing colors, requesting, describing, and following directions!

PRO TIP: Children get the most benefit when they use toys WITH adult loved ones. You are your child's best "toy"!

What to AVOID: Skip battery-operated toys and electronic gadgets. The best toys are timeless ones that don't require batteries and allow your child to be in control of their own play.

Wondering if your child’s speech is on track?”

Let’s break down early language milestones every parent should know.

Every child develops at their own pace, but here’s a general guide:
By 12 months: Babbling, saying “mama/dada,” responding to their name.

By 18 months: Using 10–20 words, following simple directions (“come here”).

By 2 years: Using 2-word phrases (“more juice,” “mummy go”), understanding simple questions.

By 3 years: Using 3-word sentences, naming familiar objects, understood by family.

By 4 years: Telling simple stories, using grammar, understood by most people.

Have questions about your child’s communication milestones?

Is Your Child Not Talking Yet? When to Consider a Speech Delay

If your child doesn’t meet some of these typical milestones you might want to raise a concern:
-No babbling as an infant
-Doesn’t use gestures (e.g., wave/point) by ~12 months
-Doesn’t respond to their name by ~12-15 months
-No single words by ~16-18 months
-Language regression (loses skills they had)

Every child develops at their own pace—and some variation is normal.

However, if your gut tells you something isn’t quite right, it’s always better to check with a Speech Therapist.

Did you know your child learns language best through everyday moments — not just during therapy sessions?

Here are a few easy ways to help them grow their speech skills right at home
✔Talk as you go: Describe what you’re doing throughout the day. (“We’re washing the apples. Red apples!”)
✔Create chances to request: Keep favorite toys just out of reach so they have to ask for them.
✔Ask & wait: Give your child time to answer — even a few seconds makes a big difference!
✔Celebrate every word (or sound): Praise their effort, not just perfection.
✔Turn routines into learning: Bath time, snack time, story time — each one is a language opportunity!

Tip: Keep it fun and natural.

Did you know the best way to build your child’s language is through everyday moments?

Talk about what you’re doing as you go – “We’re washing the apples!”, “The car is red!”

Even 5–10 minutes of play where you follow their lead helps your child grow in confidence and language.

If you’d like more ideas, our therapists can guide you with easy daily speech activities.

Struggling with picky eating at dinner time? Here are 3 simple that will make mealtimes positive for your kids:

✅Routine is your secret weapon.
Consistent timing of meals helps kids regulate their appetite—and you avoid the “I’m starving” or “I’m not hungry at all” extremes.

✅Set the scene for success.
Choose a comfortable chair, and quiet down the TV during mealtimes.

✅Be patient—this takes time.
It may take 15-20 tries for a child to get used to a new food. Consistency is key.
