One of the most important things you'll do as a parent of an autistic child who uses AAC is advocate for their device and supports in school.

Here's what you need to know:
Your child's rights:
βœ… AAC devices are considered assistive technology
βœ… If your child needs AAC to communicate, it MUST be provided
βœ… Device must be available ALL day, not just during speech therapy
βœ… School staff must be trained on the device
βœ… Communication is a civil right - schools cannot deny access

What should be in the IEP:
πŸ“ Specific AAC device/system named
πŸ“ Access to device throughout school day
πŸ“ Staff training plan and timeline
πŸ“ Communication partner training
πŸ“ Device maintenance and backup plan
πŸ“ Progress monitoring for AAC goals
πŸ“ Collaboration with outside SLP if needed

Remember: Communication is not a privilege schools can withhold. It's a RIGHT. If your autistic child needs AAC, the school must provide it. Period.

πŸ’™ Need help advocating for AAC in your child's IEP?

We provide school consultation and can attend IEP meetings! Call us at +1-786-623-4053.

One of the most common questions: 'What AAC system should my autistic child use?' Great question!

ALL of them can work! It depends on:
βœ… Your child's motor skills
βœ… Their visual abilities
βœ… Cognitive/language level
βœ… Communication needs
βœ… Environmental factors
βœ… Personal preferences!

Many autistic individuals use MULTIPLE AAC methods:
πŸ’™ Low-tech backup when device unavailable
πŸ’™ Different methods for different settings
πŸ’™ Combining speech + AAC + gestures
The evaluation process: We trial different systems to see what your child navigates most easily and what they prefer. We presume competence and offer robust systems, not just basic choices!

πŸ’¬ Ready to find the right AAC fit for your autistic child? Call us at +1-786-623-4053 for a comprehensive evaluation!

Did you know sensory processing differences can HUGELY impact communication?

Many autistic individuals experience sensory differences that affect communication:
πŸ”Š Auditory sensitivity - Background noise makes understanding speech difficult
πŸ‘οΈ Visual overload - Too much visual input prevents focus
🀚 Tactile sensitivity - Touch or clothing discomfort is distracting
πŸ’‘ Light sensitivity - Fluorescent lights are overwhelming
πŸƒ Proprioceptive needs - Need movement to regulate
πŸ‘ƒ Smell/taste sensitivity - Strong scents are intolerable

When sensory overload happens:
β€’ Speaking becomes harder/impossible
β€’ Understanding language is difficult
β€’ Communication shuts down
β€’ AAC access may be needed

Sensory processing is VALID and impacts communication! We accommodate, not force through. πŸ’™

During this Autism Acceptance Month, we want to share a powerful story that shows why AAC matters so much:

Meet 'Maya' (name changed):

Maya is an 12-year-old autistic girl who came to us five years ago. She was not using any words and had no way to communicate with her family.

Her parents were heartbroken. They KNEW she had so much to say but no way to say it.

We started with AAC:
βœ… Comprehensive evaluation
βœ… High-tech AAC device with robust vocabulary
βœ… Weekly therapy teaching device navigation
βœ… Parent training for modeling
βœ… School consultation for classroom use
βœ… Presumed competence from day one

The transformation:
Within 3 months, Maya was using her device to make requests, comment on activities, and express feelings.

Her mom told us: 'I finally know my daughter. I know what she loves, what bothers her, what she dreams about. AAC gave her a voice - and gave us our relationship back. She's still autistic, and we love her exactly as she is. But now she can TELL us who she is.'

THIS is why we do what we do. Every autistic person deserves a way to communicate. Period.

πŸ’™ Does your autistic child need AAC? Don't wait. Call us at 786-623-4053 | www.globalspeechandrehab.com to schedule an evaluation.

Many autistic individuals are STRONG visual learners!

Visual supports can be game-changing:

Why visuals work:
✨ Reduce auditory processing demands
✨ Provide predictability (reduces anxiety)
✨ Stay available (don't disappear like spoken words)
✨ Support independence
✨ Align with how many autistic brains process info!

Research shows: Visual supports are evidence-based strategies that improve communication, reduce challenging behaviors, and increase independence for autistic individuals!

If you're not using visual supports yet - start today! They're powerful tools. πŸ’™

Social Communication Differences in Autism: Understanding & Supporting πŸ’™

Social communication is one of the core areas of difference for autistic individuals.

Understanding these differences helps us provide better, neurodiversity-affirming support.

Our neurodiversity-affirming approach:
βœ… We DON'T force neurotypical social behaviors
βœ… We DO teach social skills that help autistic people navigate a neurotypical world when THEY want to
βœ… We respect autistic communication styles
βœ… We teach neurotypical people to understand autistic communication
βœ… We support AAC as a valid, permanent communication method
βœ… We celebrate autistic strengths
βœ… We follow autistic individuals' lead on their goals

Remember: The goal isn't to make autistic people act neurotypical. The goal is to support communication in ways that honor who they are. πŸ’™

πŸ’™ Looking for neurodiversity-affirming social communication support? We're here.

Autism is a spectrum - which means communication abilities vary WIDELY among autistic individuals. Understanding these differences helps us provide better support.

Common challenges across profiles:
β€’ Initiating communication
β€’ Understanding nonliteral language (idioms, sarcasm, jokes)
β€’ Reading facial expressions and body language
β€’ Maintaining conversations
β€’ Understanding unspoken social rules
β€’ Processing language during sensory overload

The good news? ALL of these communication differences can be supported!

Through AAC, social communication therapy, visual supports, and neurodiversity-affirming strategies, we help autistic individuals communicate effectively in the way that works BEST for them.

Remember: Different communication styles are not deficits. They're differences.

Our job is to support, accommodate, and provide access - not to make autistic people communicate like neurotypical people. πŸ’™

πŸ’™ Need support for your autistic child's communication? Our team specializes in neurodiversity-affirming therapy. Call us at +1-786-623-4053.

04/18/2026

During this Autism Acceptance Month, we want to talk about one of the MOST important principles in working with autistic individuals:

PRESUME COMPETENCE.

What does this mean?

Presuming competence means assuming that every autistic person - regardless of their communication abilities, behavior, or support needs - has thoughts, feelings, preferences, and the capacity to learn and grow.

Why this matters in AAC:
When we presume competence, we give autistic children access to FULL communication systems with thousands of words - not just basic needs.

We program complex language, feelings, opinions, and age-appropriate topics.

We give them the tools to say EVERYTHING they're thinking, not just 'I want cookie.'

Autistic advocates tell us: Many nonspeaking autistic adults say they understood EVERYTHING as children, but couldn't express it. They were frustrated when adults assumed they were 'not there' or couldn't comprehend.

Presume competence. Always. It changes everything. πŸ’™

πŸ’¬ Does your AAC provider presume competence? We do.

🚨 AUTISM + AAC MYTH BUSTER 🚨

❌ MYTH: 'AAC should be a last resort after we've tried everything else.'

βœ… FACT: AAC should be introduced EARLY, not as a last resort!
This harmful myth causes YEARS of delay for autistic children who desperately need communication support.

Here's the truth:
Why 'wait and see' is harmful:
❌ Wastes critical early intervention years
❌ Allows frustration and behavioral challenges to escalate
❌ Limits social, emotional, and cognitive development
❌ Creates learned helplessness
❌ Denies basic human right to communication

Research shows:
βœ… Early AAC = Better outcomes
βœ… AAC supports (not prevents!) speech development
βœ… No prerequisites needed
βœ… Starting AAC early maximizes potential
βœ… Many children use BOTH AAC and speech

ASHA's position is CLEAR: AAC should NOT be a last resort. It should be considered early for anyone with communication challenges, including autistic children.

If you've been told to 'wait' or 'try speech therapy first' before AAC - get a second opinion! πŸ’™

πŸ’¬ Been told your autistic child 'isn't ready' for AAC? We disagree. Call us at +1-786-623-4053 for an evidence-based evaluation.
