Before phones, texts, or social media, there was the sound of a bell.

Church bells once served as a community’s primary announcement system. When a bell rang to signal a passing, it called people together to pause, reflect, and support one another in times of loss. Long before modern communication, this tradition helped unite communities in shared remembrance and care.

Today, while the ways we connect have changed, the purpose remains the same, honoring life and supporting one another through grief.

Yes, you can absolutely plan in advance if you choose cremation.

Pre-planning allows you to make your wishes known ahead of time, whether that includes cremation, a memorial service, or how you would like your life to be honored. Planning ahead can bring peace of mind, ease the emotional burden on loved ones, and ensure your preferences are clearly documented.

Some days are heavier than others, and that is okay.

Grief doesn’t look the same from one day to the next. Some moments feel lighter, while others carry more weight, and all of it is part of the healing process. There is no timeline and no expectation to feel a certain way. Giving yourself permission to move at your own pace is an important part of caring for your heart.

At Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, we are honored to support families in Layton and throughout Davis County with compassion, understanding, and thoughtful care during life’s most difficult seasons.

Meet Rachel Vandermeide, a licensed funeral director and valued member of the Lindquist Mortuary team since 2017. Raised in Fruit Heights, Rachel grew up with strong family roots, a love for hard work, and a deep appreciation for community. She and her husband Brent have been married for over 20 years and are proud parents of six children, which Rachel considers her greatest accomplishment.

After raising her family, Rachel returned to school and earned her degree in Mortuary Science, followed by a bachelor’s degree in Funeral Home Management. As one of Lindquist’s first female funeral directors, she is passionate about serving families with compassion, understanding, and steady guidance during times of loss.

Outside of her work, Rachel is active in the Centerville/Farmington Rotary Club, enjoys musical theater, and loves spending time outdoors, traveling, and making memories with her family.

Arriving on time and being mindful of the space helps create a respectful, supportive environment for everyone in attendance. When entering a funeral home or service location, moving quietly allows families and guests to remain present in the moment.

If you are attending a visitation, taking a moment to greet the family and offer your condolences before finding a seat is always appreciated. During services, silencing or stepping away to use a cell phone helps maintain the sense of dignity and reflection that these gatherings deserve.

Small gestures of consideration can bring comfort to grieving families and help create a meaningful experience for all who are gathered to honor a life.

Valentine’s Day looks different for everyone.

Today is often centered on love, but love doesn’t disappear when someone is gone. It changes, it deepens, and it lives on in memories, traditions, and the quiet ways we carry those we miss.

If this day feels tender, you are not alone. Whether you’re honoring a partner, a parent, a child, or a dear friend, your love still matters and it is still felt.

We’re holding space for everyone who is remembering, missing, and loving deeply today. 💙
