July is UV Safety Month.

Studies show that long-term exposure to bright sunlight can cause growths on the eye, can increase the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. UV rays can reflect directly off of water and sand and can cause sunburns in just a few hours. Sunburns to the eye can cause temporary blindness. To help prevent UV related damage, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UV light as well as wearing a broad rimmed hat.

Come check out our selection of sunglasses this summer!

With local firework sales starting tomorrow, June 28th, we would like to share some information about fireworks safety.

Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars on fireworks every year. In 2021, 11,500 people sought care for fireworks related injuries, 14% of which were eye injuries. 2,600 were caused by firecrackers and sparklers. Children under age 15 make up 26% of all firework related injuries.

The World Council of Optometry recommends always wearing protective eyewear while handling fireworks, never try to reignite a firework that failed to explode, do not light fireworks in containers, and to always keep a bucket of water near.

If an eye injury, or any injury occurs, please seek immediate medical attention.

Have a happy and safe holiday week!

Let’s talk about the most common types of sports-related eye injuries.

1. UV Radiation Damage: with outdoor sports, prolonged exposure to sunlight without proper protection can lead to photokeratitis or cataracts.

2. Blunt Trauma: injuries caused by impacts that can cause bruising, bleeding around the eye, or could even fracture the eye socket.

3. Corneal Abrasion: scratches on eye that can be painful and cause watering. Often caused by fingers, particles like sand or dirt, or even by sports equipment.
