“Our risk assessment found that AI toys share fundamental problems that make them inappropriate for young children,” said Robbie Torney, Head of AI & Digital Assessments at Common Sense Media. “More than a quarter of outputs included inappropriate content such as mentions of self-harm, drugs, and risky behaviors. Combined with extensive data collection and subscription models that exploit emotional bonds, these products aren't safe for kids under 5, with serious concerns for older kids as well.”

We've issued a report and a comprehensive risk assessment of AI toys, which found that they introduce serious developmental, privacy, safety, and attachment risks. Because of their engagement-focused design and replacement of time spent engaging in more beneficial relationships and activities, we do NOT recommend the use of AI toys for children under 5 and urge caution for children ages 6-12.
