Still Waters Contemplative Retreat Center is a dream. First need land upon which to build. He leads me beside still waters (Psalm 23)

Elements of Design

Green technology heating, air conditioning, wind, solar, rain water

• Design inspires awe, beauty and peace through nature. Using awesome water, art features, sculpture. To be a calm, healing,
peace-full atmosphere… nature accessible, visible. All elements flowing
together…outdoor elements inviting into the inner space elements and back
out again.

• Central focus should be “still water” (which could be the lake) or slow moving
spring of water (baptismal font, cross, light).

• 20 Guest Rooms (one or two queen beds, private bath with shower,
Desk, lamp, recliner, closet or stand alone clothing space, or shelves,
hangers built in wall….each room accessible to outdoors. All on one floor, no
need for elevators, handicap accessible. Main entrance, Small Chapel/Prayer Room, office

• large kitchen, pantry, lots of light, open to great room with fire place

• Art room, Music Room, Library, Gift Shop...with local artists (sculpture, pottery, etc.

• Large Group Meeting area, lots of glass, round tables (8-10), 80 light weight
chairs.

• Small Rooms for spiritual direction, Message therapy

• Work Room for laundry, gardening, flowers, (could be a lower level of main
hall area).

• Back deck for sitting, woods or water in the back and front of the center. Possibly a field with lake or open field with water on the other side of the
building.

• Front porches for porch swings, lounge chairs

• Organic Gardening- benches for sitting, composting

• Small indoor Chapel

• Outdoor chapel – separate worship space.

• Outdoor labyrinth

• Large working garage/workshop

• Trails, benches, areas to camp alone

• Poustinia/ hermitage…one room cabin in the woods to seek God alone in
solitude.

• Golf Cart for transporting individuals and supplies to poustinia or wilderness
camping areas.


• Lots of Prayer

From time to time, a reader will send me a few words I wrote years ago, along with a comment. I always learn from the latter. But when I see my own, long-forgotten words, it’s like doing an archeological dig on my own life!

Sometimes, as I examine those artifacts, I think, “Wish someone had told me to deep-six that idea!” Sometimes it’s, “Well, OK, but I wish I could go back and edit my younger self!” But every now and then I think, “I’m glad those words came back to me today. I need them now even more than I did when I wrote them.”

I felt that gratitude earlier this week when a reader sent me this quote from my 1999 book, “Let Your Life Speak.” We live in an era of non-stop reminders there is much we can’t control, no matter how hard we try. We live at a time when it often seems clear, in the words of Yeats, that “the centre cannot hold.”

But there are gifts to be found on the other side of those chasms. “True self” can come into view, and we can learn that “the sacred center” is everywhere—not least in our own hearts.

With those discoveries comes the personal and collective power to keep on walking toward the elusive goal of the Beloved Community—as human beings have been doing for the whole of recorded history...

Years ago I attended a group leader training with Shalem Institute. This morning they posted this quote by John O" Donahue, "May you experience each day as a sacred gift woven around the heart of wonder". The God Sighting is that the gift of "wonder" has been on my heart and in my mind...so that we "don't miss a thing" as Zach Williams song says (Less Like Me is the song). So may we each pursue a heart of wonder, that child- like sense of seeing the beauty all around! God bless your day! And Happy Birthday to Sarah, one of our greatest blessings!
