Your nervous system is so much more than your brain and spinal cord. 🧠 It's more than the nerves running down your arms and legs. Its interconnected into every cell of your body - it pulses through vast networks of nerve plexuses and neurotransmitters into your heart, your gut, your organs and more - it not only controls and regulates the function of these systems but it is always bringing immense amounts of information IN from your environment and processing it, making sense of it, integrating it. πŸ§¬β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹When you have a 'gut feeling' that is simply your nervous system processing information through your mesenteric nerve plexuses (often called the 'second brain') faster than your cognitive mind can make sense of it. It connects with your Vagus nerve and determines if that information brings safety/peace or stress/danger. πŸ•ŠοΈβš οΈ

When our nervous system gets overwhelmed and overloaded it starts having a hard time differentiating between safety and stress and tends to start interpreting everything as dangerous, even if it is completely benign. Our neural 'Bandwidth' simply can't keep up and so it begins to shut down and we go into survival mode. 🫣

The more that we can practice regulation and assist our nervous system in integrating our environment, the more we heal and can retrain it to properly interpret the information from our life so that rather than staying stuck in stress, anxiety, or dis-ease we 're able to move toward Growth and Expansion! ✨

However, how many of us 'know' that we should eat healthy foods, move our bodies more, have healthy boundaries, get lots of sleep, and cut out harmful habits - and yet in one area or another we get stuck making the same choices πŸ”ƒπŸ«£β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

Until there is a strong enough stimulus for change, most people will continue on the status quo indefinitely. So what is a stimulus for change? from my experience it primarily comes from one of two places, either a strong sense of danger and self-preservation (major injury/accident/pain, life event, etc) πŸ€• OR a shift in perspective that increases our self-love and the intrinsic value we place on taking care of ourselves. πŸ₯°β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

It can often SEEM easier to set aside yourself and your needs for the shiny outcomes, and even well-meaning pursuits. It may sound redundant but one of my priorities for 2023 is to practice Intention regularly. It is so easy to get caught up in reactionary living - responding to the daily demands and β€œemergencies” without really pausing to set our own priorities, clarify our values, and then guiding our decisions and actions by those things. πŸ›£οΈβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

If you go to a yoga or mindful movement class they often will prompt you to set an intention for your practice that day. There have been many times where I hear that question and my mind suddenly goes blank - β€œintention? uh, well I made it here today, I hadn’t thought beyond that yet.” Maybe you can relate πŸ˜… and sometimes that is totally ok - just showing up is always the first step. But if we always just show up, we can miss out on moving towards our bigger goals and dreams. πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈπŸ’­β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

What does it really mean to set an intention or practice intentional living? It sounds so simplistic, but like many things in life simple =\= easy. To practice intention means to consciously and consistently choose both your long term goals and short term behaviors, habits, rituals, and actions. ⏳Intentional living is the result of doing that consistently in all of the different facets of your life. So often when we think about transformations we picture a big dramatic near-overnight change, maybe a Tony Robbins style seminar, or drastic dietary changes. πŸ’₯And while those can be helpful catalysts for many people, the truth is that true lasting change and transformations are usually the result of smaller but consistent changes over a much longer period of time.​​​​​​​​
It's the unglamorous day-to-day decisions, the ways you choose to show up for yourself even when, (especially when), no one is watching. It's having the grace to admit your failures, but the fortitude to get back up, dust yourself off, and refocus on who you want to become. πŸ§˜β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

The question I’ve gotten more times than I can count over the past 4 years πŸ˜… ​​​​​​​​

And the answer is both very little and a lot, at the same time. πŸ˜‰β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

No, it’s not actually magic πŸͺ„ and I’m not a wizard haha πŸ˜‚ even if I’ve gotten the nickname of the good witch from more than a couple clients πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ πŸ§™β€β™€οΈβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

The simple explanation is that I use a framework of understanding the body and the nervous system (BGI -or bio- geometric integration) that allows me to make very gentle and specific contacts that interrupt how your body has been sending information out to that tissue, muscle, organ etc and instead sends new messages to the brain 🧠 ​​​​​​​​

These new messages start to rewire the brain and ultimately create new patterns, more balance, decreased tension, improved communication and nervous system coherence. πŸ§¬πŸ”Šβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹
