✨LCDC's Small Business Spotlight of the Month goes to A-1 Appliances located at 126 Main Street! ✨ Owner, Russell Larsen purchased the business in September of 2025 and has been open for business ever since. LCDC was able to assist the owner with a Microenterprise Grant to keep the momentum going- Congratulations, Russell! A1 Appliances has been a community staple for over 20 years so we are thrilled that the business remains open under new ownership! 🪛🔩🔨

Get to know the owner:

☑️What do you like about being in business in North Tonawanda?
"The area is beautiful, having the river right at my back door and having Webster Street
right down the road. Everyone has been so helpful and welcoming, from everyone over
at the LCDC and the Hughes family to the random drop in customer walking by stopping
in to say hello. It’s been great meeting and working with the wonderful people of this
tight-knit community and being able to serve their appliance needs."

☑️How did you get into appliance repairs?
"My mother owns and operates a used appliance store out of Lockport that’s been
around for over 60 years. Ever since I could remember I was going with her to work
when I was sick from school or she couldn’t find a sitter. As I grew in age, the more I
was able to help from cleaning to deliveries, eventually leading to fixing machines and
doing service work."

☑️Where do you see the business in 5 years?
"Being more established and able to have the time and manpower to add in home
service work to greater assist the community with their appliance needs."

☑️A breif list of your inventory/available items:
"It’s always hard to give an exact inventory since things are always coming and going,
but I deal with washers, dryers, fridges and stoves. I get a large variety of inventory from
older than me to a few years old and rarely new. You never know what I have, so you
can always give me a call and see what I have available. I also sell parts, so if anything
is needed for your appliances, I can order them new or might even have it in store
available used."

☑️Are there any deals or information you would like people to know?
"I don’t typically have any set deals in place, but I usually try to cut some costs if multiple
machines are bought at once. Delivery is available depending on location and difficulty
starting at $75, that includes full installation and removal of the old. I also have an in-
shop service, if you drop the machine off I can diagnose and fix it. I buy old machines as
well, typically above scrap price so any scrappers out there can swing them by on the
way to the yard or send some pictures and I’ll let you know if I'm interested."

✨For the month of March, Lumber City Development Corporation would like to recognize Niagara Climbing Center as our Small Business Spotlight! ✨

Niagara Climbing Center opened in February 1998 with the goal of bringing indoor climbing to the North Tonawanda and WNY community. As one of the earliest indoor climbing gyms in North America (perhaps the 3rd oldest), it was created to be a welcoming place where people of all ages could challenge themselves, learn new skills, and experience the excitement of climbing. Founders and operators Billy and Rhonda McGuire have upheld community involvement by taking their portable climbing wall to Saturday Academies, partnering with youth climbing programs, Girl and Boy Scouts, supporting local charities, schools, and churches.

NCC is evolving with the sport by transitioning to a modern bouldering-focused facility while keeping the welcoming community atmosphere that Niagara Climbing Center has been known for. These new changes came from Business Partner, Ethan Farkas, who has been imperative in this renovation. Lumber City Development is proud to partner with NCC for these new improvements by assisting them with a Economic Development through NYS Community Development Block Grant Program which encourages business attraction, expansion, and retention. With the introduction of their new bouldering-focused facility, we hope these funds help to keep NCC in the North Tonawanda community for another 25+ years!

NCC hopes they can introduce many more people in WNY to the empowering sport, see families spend time together, and watch climbers' confidence grow. The community atmopshere at NCC is truly impressive and we are very lucky to have them in North Tonawanda. Whether you are a first time climber or heading to the Yoga studio, you will certainly be welcomed here. 🧘🧗‍♀️

Congratulations to owners Rhonda, Billy, Ethan, all of the staff, climbers, and community!👏
