Widower Mistakes And Other Bad Ideas

I have to confess, (and this will hopefully make you feel better about your own situation), it’s been many years since my loss, and I feel much stronger these days.

Funny thing is, not much in my life has actually changed.

It’s me that’s changed.

Here’s the thing…I’m just seeing things differently now.

Life’s a mirror, and lately, the guy staring back looks like he’s finally getting his act together.

A few years into this whole ‘widower’ thing (yeah, still not a fan of that word), I suddenly saw how much my life had slid downhill. Fences sagging, boxes piling up in the hallway, a general vibe of ‘abandoned construction site.’

I had no clue how bad it had been until the fog started to lift. It was like someone hit pause on my life and forgot to unpause it. I even started calling my place ‘Green Acres,” mostly as a joke. Mostly.

In those first couple of years, I made some questionable creative decisions. Like chopping down half my trees because I hated raking leaves.

Sure, problem solved, if you don’t mind your yard looking like a sun-baked moonscape.

I bought a really fancy treadmill because I was told “definitely get in better shape, it will help heal your grief.”

It’s now a very expensive clothes rack.

They say not to make any big decisions in the first year after losing someone. I’d say give it two, minimum. Even now, all these years later, I still second-guess myself sometimes.

But that’s fine. Because I’m still noticing progress, and the kind you can actually feel.

So yes, the yard is still a mess, the treadmill is still a dust collector, but I’m standing a little more upright.

I’m still trying to rebuild my life piece by piece…and I’m okay with that.

They didn’t just preserve the body….they preserved the chance to say goodbye.🇺🇸

Honoring Our Embalmed Dead During the Civil War, a new practice…EMBALMING—allowed families to bring their fallen sons home.

For the first time, loved ones could see their soldier’s face one last time, not just remember their name.

This act of care, born from our civil 🇺🇸 war, became a sacred American tradition of dignity and remembrance that continues today.

On this Veterans Day, I want to honor every soldier who gave their life. 🇺🇸 and those who devoted their hands 💀 and hearts to bringing them home. 🕯️
