BEFORE YOU CAST THAT SPELL ⭐ do you take time for inner work or do you just gloss over that step in your rush to create magick?

It is understandable that we reach for a spell in a heightened state of emotions; feeling desperate, frustrated, anxious or angry about a situation or circumstance or a pattern that keeps happening.

And while the energy of those emotions can be powerful to harness and fuel the transformation you desire, it is important to slow down and take a moment for some inner work before spell work.

Here are some of my favorite tools:

⭐ Journaling about what specifically you want to create change around.

⭐ Using an intuitive art such as tarot for additional insight. (Sometimes that includes reaching out to a trusted reader for valuable insight from another person.)

⭐ Taking a step back or some time away to reflect, meditate or walk or yoga or dance or another grounding practice.

⭐ Talk it out with a trusted resource, qualified healer, licensed therapist or your kindred magickal community.

⭐ Get really clear on what, where, why & how you want to create this change.

⭐ Before you actually do your spell work, visualize the desired outcome using all your senses.

Most importantly, resist the urge to run to your magick in a heated state. By slowing down and doing the reflective work, your magick will be more aligned and effective.

How do we approach the difficult cards that inevitably show up in a tarot reading? It is important that we are candid and avoid glossing over or "sugar coating" the more challenging messages that can arise.

But it is also important that we are tactful, compassionate and empowering when navigating the conversations that take place during a reading.

And honestly, we reach for the guidance of tarot when standing at a crossroads, navigating transitions or struggling to find answers.

When those cards that feel heavy or ominous show up, it helps to have a solid foundation of knowledge to draw upon. It is also essential to have training and experience in facilitating the greater container of the reading itself.

It can be unsettling to have a "scary" card in your reading. But tarot is a reflective mirror that requires turning it in different angles so you can catch the light held within the shadow.

Consider the wisdom a difficult scene depicted in a card might offer as a metaphor for release, rest, moving forward, healing or creating change.

WHEN YOU SIMPLIFY YOUR MAGICK, YOU AMPLIFY IT

🔥 Some times it is necessary to declutter your magick.

RAW, SIMPLE AND REAL.

Are you standing on shifting grounds, seeking clarity on where you are and, more importantly, where you want to go?

These are the pivotal moments when a tarot reading can be an invaluable tool.

Tarot Readings weave together wisdom, intuition, mysticism, and insight, to examine the greater mysteries of your soul’s evolutionary process so that you can bring about deep shifts and initiate progressive, forward motion in your life.

Tarot invites a deeper conversation and reflective look at yourself, situations, circumstances, opportunities and intersecting relationships unfolding in your life.

Winifred's approach to reading tarot is rooted in the belief that our lives are NOT static, set with pre-determined outcomes.

Rather, our lives are dynamic and flowing, that we can work towards unlocking our potential with the wisdom of tarot as a guide.

Our focus during a Tarot Reading will be on respecting and empowering your personal agency as a dynamic, independent spirit capable of invoking your free will to impact your destiny.

As an intuitive reader, Winifred draws upon her knowledge, training and experience gained from studying tarot and reading for clients for 25+ years. Not only has she read tarot professionally for hundreds of clients, she also teaches tarot.

Your reading will focus on providing insight infused with action.

If you feel called to book a reading with Winifred, she has openings for new and returning clients. Readings can be either In-Person (Northampton, MA) and Virtually (online via Zoom).

After you make your selection and purchase, Winifred will email you her booking calendar.

What does it mean when I say I practice Earth-Centered Spirituality?

For me, it means that I honor and center the Earth as sacred and that the divine resides within the physical world, not outside of it.

My spirituality is relational and embodied. I understand that I am not separate from all other beings on the planet, and nature itself, but inter-connected, part of the greater web of life. This includes all other beings and inhabitants.

I have always been highly sensitive and tuned into the natural world. As a child, I spent hours outside talking with trees, listening to the wind and sensing that there was far more to the world than just what my physical eyes could see.

I am an animist. I believe all of creation has its own form of sentience, even if it doesn't look like my own experience of sentience. It is through cultivating a mindful practice of presence, deep listening and entering stillness that I commune.

As a steward, living sustainably, reducing my impact when possible, composting, organic gardening, nurturing pollinator spaces & native plants, practicing harm reduction are just some of my values as an Earth-Centered Spiritualist, Witch and Pagan.

INITIATION ✨For many Witches, this powerful Rite of Passage conjures up images of candle lit circles where robed figures chant secret words carried upwards on the smoke of incense.

Initiation is an important Rite of Passage for many Witches, marking a completion of a certain level of study, applied practice and wisdom that also acknowledges commitment to the Path of Witching.

When I first stepped on my path, I was young, a teenager, without a like-minded community to instruct and guide me, so I had to rely on books. I was driven by a burning desire in my heart to BE a Witch.

The most accurate way to describe this powerful inner drive, is to say I had a calling. I wasn’t sure what all involved being a Witch, but I knew I was meant to dedicate my life to the Goddess.

And so I did. When I was just 16 years old.

Alone, I went out into my suburban backyard on the night of a Full Moon and dedicated my life to the Goddess with a ritual I had written on a piece of notebook paper.

🌒 I didn’t have any fancy robes.

🌓 I didn’t own the "right" magical tools.

🌔 I didn’t have a perfect altar.

🌕 I didn’t have a wise elder to anoint me.

It was just me, the full moon and the Goddess, but my simple ritual was raw and real.

Later on, I would discover that Self-Initiation is considered by many to be “invalid” since another Witch did not declare you a Witch.

I thought, who is it that thinks they can come between a person & their private conversation with the Goddess? If you are called, study & do the work, how can someone stand in judgement over another’s path?

I have met Self-Initiated Witches that hold more magick in their pinky finger than the most lofty & scholarly “official” Witches out there.

This isn't about throwing shade at the traditional path to the Craft found in Covens and Degree-Training Schools in any way. (I eventually went on to be “formally" initiated and have completed a 5+ year long Mystery School.)

My point here is that there is validity in BOTH ways.

There are deeper mysteries afoot, than meet the eye, when it comes to how we are called to our spiritual traditions. We arrive at the table of Witching however we are called by Spirit.

Earth my Body, Water my Blood, Air my Breath and Fire my Spirit ... The first time I heard this chant it vibrated deep into my bones and sent shivers of remembering through my blood.

It is the chant I come home to over and over again.

As a life long Pagan, I am an Earth Witch and Animist to my core.

The trees, plants and land have always spoken to me. I can spends hours and, yes, days, outside.

There is both stillness and symphony in the fierce beauty of Mother Earth.

How do we maintain our spiritual practices in Chaotic Times? Especially when our nervous systems are struggling with a constant bombardment of distressing world information, over stimulation and dysregulation that keeps us in fight or flight, freeze or fawn mode just trying to survive?

How do we lean into our Craft when we are perpetually navigating between anxiety, rage, fear, grief and despair?

In uncertain and chaotic times, it is completely understandable to be struggling to work your Craft. Even more so when you consider the self-directed nature of being a Witch, Pagan or Earth-Centered Mystic where so much of our spiritual practices are internally generated rather than driven by external structures that other dominant culture religions have in place.

So what do we do when we are feeling tapped out yet crave the comfort, support and renewal our earth-centered spirituality provides?

I can only share what works for me in the hope that some part of it might work for you.

First, I begin with my top 5 Spiritual Practices for Difficult Times that I can turn to no matter how exhausted, frozen or depleted I am.

Below is my list in case something on it helps you, but more importantly is to create your own that fits your needs, capacity and lifestyle.

Earthing and Grounding Exercises. Being outside is key, but even just looking out a window at the local birds or tending to a small plant in my home helps.

Listen to inspiring and uplifting music, to sing, move, or meditate. If I don’t have a means to play music, then I sing spiritual chants I know by heart.

Simple offerings and communion with my Guardian Deities

Simple offerings and communion with my Ancestors, Spirit Allies and Guides

Specific Devotional Prayers such as the Charge of the Goddess or a Pagan version of the Lorica

Your list will be different from mine. Most important is that it is very accessible for you to utilize especially when your bandwidth is challenged. Choose items that are the most restorative and do not require much in order for you to practice.  You might choose journaling, reading or making art. Explore what works for you and what doesn’t.

My favorite kind of altar is a Working Altar. There are many kinds of altars. Ones for celebrating the Moon, Sabbats, Ancestors, Deity,..even the classic “Witch’s Altar” (which varies depending on your tradition and practice). But my favorite altar is a “Working Altar”.

On any given day, you will find a humble, but hardworking magickal altar in the main living area of my home. It is set up on a small, round wooden table and doesn’t take up much space. Typically it is minimalistically adorned with only the essential elements required to the current focus of my intention.

A core aspect of my working altar is that it is an interactive space where I engage daily with my spiritual practice.

Over the years, I have found that keeping my working altar simple, focused and readily accessible to my everyday life has deepened my craft and honed my magickal aptitude.

The Human Behind AwenTree 🌙 Hey there, I'm Winifred Costello, founder and owner of AwenTree, the sacred space where healing and magick intersect.

I dedicated my life to the Goddess way back when I was a teen, but I didn't step out as a mystical entrepreneur until I opened the first iteration of AwenTree in 2006... 20 YEARS AGO !!!

Since then, both AwenTree and I have grown and evolved tremendously. Together, we have weathered many things and navigated big changes (including changing locations and graduating from a 5+ year long Mystery School).

My journey as a Witch and Keeper of a public facing magickal community space (the reality is most pagan businesses are essential community spaces) has brought me profound personal growth and development.

Through it all, my guiding North Star has always been the mission to provide what I wished had been available for me in my early years as a pagan >>> healing services, empowering guidance, community hub and educational resources for folks who practice earth-centered spirituality.

I have more grey hair than when I started, but my passion to empower others on their magickal path of healing, transformation and growth still burns bright.

When I am not busy doing tarot readings, energy healing sessions or leading ritual, you will find me out in the garden or on a hike.
