Herbalist and Midwife Virginia Ahearn

Herbalist and Midwife Virginia Ahearn I have been a teacher and practitioner of herbal medicine for 17 years. I have been a certified post partum doula since 2007.

I have been a home birth midwife since 2002 and received my license from the
NJ Board of Medical Examiners in 2005. My work with herbs and private clients is about treating the individual person with the illness, not treating the illness. Each person is unique and illnesses will manifest differently. Two people can have a cold, and each will have a different herbal formula, based on what the symptoms are like. Herbs can be used to support and strengthen body systems so that the body can do the healing it was designed to do. I create unique herb formulas for each client and also include basic information on healthy eating and other lifestyle habits. I teach how to make using herbs user friendly. I have offices in New Brunswick New Jersey and in Northampton Ma. My work as a post partum doula is to assist and support families with newborns and babies. I offer breastfeeding support, basic baby care and baby 'skills' teaching such as bathing, soothing a fussy baby. I offer meal preparation, light housework and time for parents to get some sleep!

A beloved teacher and leader in the herbal healing world for more than 50 years, Rosemary Gladstar has curated this collection to explore key themes in herbalism, including:

*The sacred teachings of the plants
*The importance of preserving knowledge of the plants' healing properties and the work of herbal healers
*The practices of gardening and gathering herbs in the wild
*The power and passion of the herbal community
*The rich value of living with gratitude and reverence for the Earth, and a deep connection to the plant world.

Many of the quotes are original to this collection, excerpted from Gladstar's private correspondence and conversations. Her narrative voice introduces each theme, and the text is accompanied by stunning photographs and artwork celebrating the beauty and wonder of plants.

One of my favorite herbs for building short term memory is Gotu Kola...When I first started studying herbal medicine 30+ years ago, my memory was poor due to lifestyle things like going to bed too late and then not sleeping well. I had to fix those underlying issues, but I also started taking gotu kola every day, and wow, it helped so much! I had so much more mental clarity. It was one of my first successful usages of herbs. I hope to see you at my class on Sunday on Herbs for Memory and Brain Health! See flier on post below.

my meditation on turmeric... on the topic of pharmaceudical greed, I was reading an article from several years ago, about a company who had a patent on an anti-inflammatory drug, and for years, blocked other companies from getting patents on similar drugs which were cheaper. They did this to maximize profits-of course-billions of dollars worth. This caused some rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients to have to continue working, rather than retire, due to the out of pocket cost of the drug! While some people do need pharmaceudicals, turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and used with other herbs and a complete protocol (foods, etc), it can reduce pain dramatically. it is one of my favorite herbs!

Happy Spring! While it is still pretty chilly in western Mass., this is a good time to start some spring herbal tonics. Burdock root, Violet leaf and flower are two classic herbs for enlivening your lymphatic system. As it warms up more and turns to summer, red clover buds are one of my favorites. Here I am harvesting red clover about 10 years ago.
