This week's topic is "What is Stress?"

In my practice I see a lot of people who claim they have no stress in their life. They call themselves busy or say they handle all the pieces of their lives. This week's topic is about who stress is not an emotion. It is a tax on the body. Like being exposed to a toxin or eating bad food, it doesn't matter what you think about it. It is happening to your animal body.

Tip #7 of 7 on topic "How To Change A Habit"

You make a list of all your reasons and obstacles. Then you make a list of all the ways you could wiggle around your biggest obstacle. Then you cherrypick the absolute easiest way to get around the obstacle. Make things so absurdly easy it is almost embarrassing. Then savor the ease over and over and over so you are rewriting the muscle memory around the good habit.

Tip #6 of 7 on topic "How to Change a Habit"

Okay you have a list of reasons and obstacles. Which item on the list is really in the way. Take away all the things that could be really easily wiggled or reexamined.
What is left that is non-negotiable?
Start there.
How do you honor that it IS non-negotiable?

Now the brainstorming starts. How can you find someway around that obstacle? Step fully into your "there are no bad ideas" mindset. Put them all out there. This is your gateway to change.

Tip #5 of 7 on topic "How to Change A Habit"

You are not lazy. You manage to balance a lot of complicated things in your life. You should make a list of all the small and large things you are responsible for in your life. Then you should make a list of how many extra things you do for pure enjoyment. You have time for those things. You have energy and determination for all those things.
You are not lazy. So what if the reasons and obstacles and lack of clarity were actually the problem, not you. What if you let go of the judgement to make room for brainstorming.

Tip #4 of 7 on topic "How to Change A Habit"

Believe me. There are obstacles. You need to listen to them. Reasons are often more emotional. Obstacles are things that are actually in the way of your progress.

Some examples:
A 30 minute drive both ways.
Childcare issues.
No space in your house.
Inability to take a break for 3 hour stretches.
Not having the right clothes.
Not owning an alarm.
Having roommates.

Whatever obstacles are in your way. They need to be discussed and contemplated. There are probably just as many reasons you are not doing something as there are obstacles.

Tip #2 of 7 on topic "How to Change A Habit"

Why don't you already do it?

Hint: it isn't because you are lazy or a horrible person.
You are not doing a habit that would transform your life for a laundry list of really good reasons. I promise you, there are good reasons. If you honor the reasons, some space may open up.

Maybe you are worried about the cost.
Maybe you don't have enough energy to do it.
Maybe you don't have enough time.
Maybe you don't want to leave your house.
Maybe you are afraid of what people will think of you.
Maybe you are embarrassed of being a beginner.

Trust that your reasons are authentic and worthy of considering.

Tip #2 of 7 on topic "How to Change A Habit"

A habit actually has a lot of details and a lot of muscle memory. You wake up, you turn up the heat, you put slippers on and then you turn on the coffee maker. All of that is an ingrained habit. Each of those are individual habits reinforced by the others.
If you want to change a habit, you must first understand the details. If you want to exercise more you need to start asking questions. What type of movement is interesting and safe for your body? What time of day would you like to workout? Where would you like to work out? Do you want to work out alone or with a buddy? How are you going to handle sweat afterwards? How do you handle eating before and after? What about your workout clothes? Or your working clothes if you exercise after work?

Dive into the silly details. Get insanely specific.

Tip #1 of 7 on Topic "How to Change A Habit"

"I don't drink enough water."
"This year I will get in shape."
"I need to get more sleep."
"I have to change my stress level."
People make wide open statements about their health with tons of judgement and annoyance at themselves. All of those statements have one thing in common: no plan. A plan starts with a declaration.
"I want to figure out how to drink 64 ounces of water every day. 32 ounces before noon, 32 ounces after noon."
